Wow,

Excellent post Brian.

Thank you for posting, and presenting it so nicely.

Peter,

I LIKE THIS....A LOT, can I steal (I mean borrow) it please? 8)

I guess I am just going to be a contrarian then, because I really think Peter made my point for me.

YMMV

Thanks for the comments everyone. I was certainly not intending to give a sermon when I brought my thoughts into clear focus and published them. I really appreciate those who took the time to expresss their opinion on the subject.

One line that I wrote bears repeating in my view as it really was the crux of my message.

"Please remember to be kind to those who cross your path on your journey through life. An act of kindness won't necessarily be remembered by the giver but the recipient will remember it until the day they die."

If you do that people will always remember you with fondness in their heart.

Well, first off, maybe i'm not very attentive but i hadn't noticed any "group thinking" here. Maybe in some aspects, but in general, people here are much different, sometimes with opposing views, and the key is to keep good spirits and positive communication even in case somebody's black is the other somebody's white.
Second, well said, Brian. It is important to think before saying, just like in real life (now if only i followed that rule...). The only trouble is — many people, if not all, have their own "hot buttons" that they try to hide/not to reveal, and therefore others may not know of their (i mean
hot buttons) existence and nature. So it is always possible to hurt somebody unintentionally. That doesn't mean we don't need to try to be friendly to each other, it's just sometimes the reason for conflicts is lack of information or misunderstanding (or "the wrong moment of time").
Nothing will get you dead quicker than being deadly serious about yourself.

I always come here as my refuge to the constant rush and quell of everyday life. I've seen a lot of people come and go here as a member of the forum; and the ones who make demands ("Why can't I get checkered binding on my 4003?"; "Why doesn't RIC make the guitar I want?"; etc, etc) don't last very long around here. It's the knowledge, helpfulness, generosity and love of Rickenbacker instruments from its' forumites that has gravitated many of us to this wonderful place that Peter started over 10 years ago. Yes, there is always potential for bruised egos and feelings along the way, but that can happen almost anywhere on any public forum on the web. If one has an agenda or a particular axe to grind, this is not the place hear that sort of pettiness or vindictiveness towards RIC. There are plenty of other places on the web where you can air your rants. This is a place to celebrate Rickenbacker instruments, not to knock them down a peg to get your point across. Yes, I understand all about free speech; but that still doesn't give you the right to yell "Fire" in a crowded movie theater. People say things on e-mails and on bulletin boards/blogs that they would NEVER say to anyone face to face. You may agree or disagree with me, but that is your prerogative. Brian; I can't comment any further on your words because you have said it so eloquently; but of course, that's the kind of person you are. :D All I can say is that I'm proud to be a forum member, fortunate for the friendships and camradierie from felow forumites over the years, and to keep on discussing our favorite guitars for another 10 years (or more)! Just my two cents on this issue...

If I could be so bold as to offer my opinion, I have had a lot of fun and learned a lot at this forum. About a year or so ago, I stopped going into the RICK specific forums as I found I have little in common with the collectors who value their instrument WAY higher than I do. I seem to have found quite a bit in common with folks who like rock and blues, along with tube amps, tone, musicianship, and other instruments. I have been debating about whether or not to hang around as it has been pointed out that maybe this isn't the place for those other topics.

However, with these new chapters and all, a guy could spend years here talking to folks and NEVER post in a Rick specific forum. If that's ok, I'll hang around some more, of course, that'll mean more blues!

On the fence but leaning backwards!

Ron,

I am truly humbled by your kind words and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Yours is a friendship among many others that I value and trust.

This is not about me though, it's about how we ought to treat each other

Charly,

Welcome back.

While I am very happy to be a part of this safe haven in the storm to discuss our Rickenbackers, and feel to be a true supporter of this community, I have seen what Matt was pointing out when some post their concerns about issues with Ricks. Anything less than an embracing of all the "idiosyncrasies" of our beloved instruments has been and is not always met with the courtesies and tolerance everyone here is professing. Before you react, think about it and be honest. I just don't want, as Peter and the others have professed, this place to turn into a ***** session.

One world IS enough for all of us.

John, I had a really long response to this ready to post, but what it all boils down to is essentially this: while I understand what you're saying, I would have to say that Rickenbackers are idiosyncratic, "take 'em or leave 'em" type of instruments. There are many people who are used to playing Fenders or Gibsons that try out a Rickenbacker, and don't like it because it's different from what they're used to. These people can be intolerant towards us, and in turn, we can be intolerant towards them.

We all just need to chill. The reason I've stuck around this forum is because there's no drama. Everybody here is cool. Let's continue to be. Like Brian said - let's all take a deep breath.

The Gibson or Fender players trying out a Rick is not what I was talking about. I am through posting in this thread because I feel ANY more posts by anyone could just be more divisive.

Too many other interesting things to post about.
