I may be wrong, but if memory serves me right, the Carl Wilson Limited Edition was designed with quite a bit of input from Carl's family and that the old style was rejected in favor of the newer style.

Regardless, my 360/12CW is the best Ric that I own. I only wish that I had not passed on purchasing a matching six string when I had the opportunity to do so.
