Thanks Kent Armstrong electronic I can say: Harleybacker is CS bass on the steroids
But this competition is not fair. CS basses stay on the top of passive passive electronic, Harleybacker is simply different way, with all the positives and all the negatives, what active circuits bring. Kent Armstrong is clever man, he taylored the bass frequency on 80 Hz, so I can get the firm and fat bottom from this instrument.

Than You! You can see...I´m always thinking about some improvements of Rickenbacker basses
. I used on Harleybacker one idea from our great "Red Instigator" project. Color of pick up is in accordance with the color of the body.
Enlightment for RRF members: Red Instigator is not secret agent
, it is a special Instigator pick up from Sérgio, where I designed some new shape and look, milling the oval hole in original PU cover and painting the PU in silver/Red combination. Better to see:Before:

Mark Walker helped me a lot with my Harleybacker. He did many magics with his Photoshop and we tried some combination, like White/White, White/Gold White /Silver, etc... etc...
BTW: With the certain of Mark bass we can create more interesting pair

Love the checked headstock binding. I've got some vintage style knobs I can paint up for you so you've got white w/ black notches. Look for it soon at a customs agent near you.
Just to add my 2 cents to the HS gap topic, my '68 mags are definitely wider gapped than my '64s. Here are the two mags side-by-side:
left: '68, right: '64
1968 4001
1964 RM 1999
The bobbins used in 1967-68 were significantly taller than the prior versions used from the late 50's into 1966-67, so to compensate for the limited space between the poles & magnets, the gap had to be spread. The taller bobbins as seen in the last versions of the 4001 horseshoe pickups were what became the first "high gain" pickups which were used from '69-'71ish when the horsehoes were discontinued and replaced by the small compressed magnets that sit under the bobbin.
