Ricky 6-string... 660 or 620?

Post by robinje »

Hi. I am new here and am considering a 6-string solid body Rickenbacker. I want single coils, so I've narrowed it down to either a 660 or a 620. These both seem like really nice guitars, so I am having trouble deciding between them. Unfortunately, I live way in the sticks so trying out before buying is not an option. When I eventually order one, I'll make sure the shop has a return policy in case my choice doesn't work out...

So, which one would be best for me? I generally play 60's/70's-style rock both clean and with some overdrive. The vintage reissue toasters would probably be ideal for my clean sound, but I wonder how they sound through an overdrive pedal or through my cranked up Princeton Reverb. On the other hand, intuition tells me the high gains on the 620 would sound good overdriven, but how do they sound played clean compared to the toasters? Other than the pickup differences, the neck profiles on these two axes seem a bit different. I think the 660's wider string spacing might work better for my "sausage" fingers, but perhaps I could adapt to the narrower 620. For reference, my only other electric guitar is a Fender AVRI Thin Skin '52 Tele with a neck humbucker, which has a moderately "thick" neck and I like it.

I must admit, I do prefer the vintage-y looks of the 660 (checkered binding, retro tuners, black knobs, gold plastic... oh, yeah!). But the 620 looks nice, too. Price isn't really a consideration. I am really torn which way to go here, although the 660 is tempting me a little more than the 620. Any insight here as to which one I should get? Please don't say to buy both! Maybe one day I could afford them both, but I can only get one right now. Thanks! :D

I vote 660! Really, whichever one you'll choose you'll love, but yeah, if cost isn't an issue the 660 just looks way cooler. Plus, the scatterwound toaster pickups have that classic Rickenbacker sound.

I also happen to think that the 660/6 has the best-looking headstock in the Ric lineup with the walnut wings. The 620 just has maple.

A word of advice: don't order one unless you have to. There are several online stores that regularly have these guitars in stock. People on this forum have placed orders with Rickenbacker at their local stores for the most basic models and are waiting obscenely long amounts of time.

Jim, either is an excellent choice. The 660 does have a wider neck, which may be to your preference.

The 660 will do clean sounds nicely, but won't overdrive well due to the weaker output pickups. I bought one in the summer for the looks alone, but couldn't get over the (abnormally?) wide neck and unpleasant overdriven sound. The neck really is WIDE, so if you can, it'd be a good idea to try it out first. I can't comment on the 620's neck, but my 330/12's neck, which is the same width as the 620's, is fully playable even as a 12er. And my hands are big. Plus the highgain pickups sound great both clean and overdriven.

I vote 620. The new ones look great, and the adjustable hi-gain pick-ups can't be beat.

620. The 660 neck is pretty wide for only 6 strings (12 strings would be a different story, though).

From what you have said, the 620 might better fit your music range, but the 660 might better fit your fingers ... tough choice, but I'd say ease of playing takes priority, as you can always add an effects unit of some sort to get the sound you want.

Yeah, what he said. Take your cash in hand and buy store stock. Hunt around the 'net if you have to. But do it that way, don't order if you can possibly help it. I know.

I've owned at least four different 660s. I sold them all even though they were all gorgeous. I like the thinner necks of the 620. I like them even more since RIC "shrunk" the headstock and did the full width inlays. :P

BTW, I just read an ad for a '60's 625 with crushed tooth inlays.

Thanks for your replies! It's interesting that the votes are overwhelmingly for the 620. When I mentioned that I'll order a new guitar, I meant from a dealer who has one in stock, not from the Ric factory. I've seen plenty of online in-stock examples of both the 620 and 660. Even though I can afford a 660, the 620 would save me some $$$, which is always welcome. Hmm... I need to do more thinking (aka agonizing)!

I realize I am late to the party here, but I too "vote" in favor of the 620. My 620 "sixer" is from 1996 and lacks the adjustable pole piece high gains, but is none the less a very versatile guitar indeed.

I have the new high gains on my 2008, 330 and Ric really nailed it with these pickups! Very clean chime and jangle, but with enough output to get a good "grind" going when called for... A new 620 with the newer high gains would be "the ticket" IMHO.

I would suggest playing one before buying; with the 620, if you cannot readily lay your hands on that exact model, pretty much any 300 series guitar will give you the same "feel" as they are dimensionally similar as far as neck width goes. This is especially true at the nut, which I would guess is where your concern lies.

Good luck,

JR
