Re: The Paul McCartney sound
I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...
Re: The Paul McCartney sound
Where've you been Vincent? Are you back from Brasil?
Re: The Paul McCartney sound
I think Paul only used the neck pickup on his 4001. It even went a long time with the horseshoe non-functioning before the bass was repaired at the factory.

Naw. It was the part about being more specific than long shiny ones!rudi_remme wrote:Which part is cracking you up? Either way I'm a joke...dog wrote:rudi_remme wrote:I will try out those TI flats. Thanks!

Yes i am back. From Argentina.
Re: The Paul McCartney sound
I am pretty sure Paul played Rickenbacker flats as JH has posted over on the RIC forum about Paul's bass tech and his search for all the old RIC flat sets he could get. Also, Paul used a LOT of compression. I always thought he only used the neck pickup but these pictures of the Revolver sessions disprove that. Also looks like the neck is low and the treble pup up all the way???

John, some here believe that the wiring harness was flipped, hence down = neck pickup.

Ahh, yes, I remember now - a righty harness on a lefty guard. That re-aligns the universe for me...sloop_john_b wrote:John, some here believe that the wiring harness was flipped, hence down = neck pickup.
Re: The Paul McCartney sound
I agree with that theory. I do believe there are a few tunes with the horseshoe being used though. Glass Onion comes to mind. I hear that rear pu clanking through the mix.
At least that's what it sounds like to me. Sounds great, IMO!

Hmm..I always thought Glass Onion was Fender Jazz Bass, at least that's what I play when we do that tune, perhaps I'm wrong.teeder wrote:I agree with that theory. I've got a feeling that all those "clanky" tunes are in fact, the jazz bass.teeder wrote:I agree with that theory. I do believe there are a few tunes with the horseshoe being used though. Glass Onion comes to mind. I hear that rear pu clanking through the mix.

Re: The Paul McCartney sound
They are commonly thought of as the Jazz, but the sound has always reminded me more of an uncapped horseshoe.tennis_nick wrote:I've got a feeling that all those "clanky" tunes are in fact, the jazz bass.
Re: The Paul McCartney sound
My thoughts exactly. I easily get closer to that sound with the 4001S with the two pu's combined (either with or without the cap) than I do with the JB. And my JB is on the bright side.sloop_john_b wrote:They are commonly thought of as the Jazz, but the sound has always reminded me more of an uncapped horseshoe.tennis_nick wrote:I've got a feeling that all those "clanky" tunes are in fact, the jazz bass.

I think the "clanky" tunes are actually a Fender Bass VI.sloop_john_b wrote:They are commonly thought of as the Jazz, but the sound has always reminded me more of an uncapped horseshoe.tennis_nick wrote:I've got a feeling that all those "clanky" tunes are in fact, the jazz bass.
