I have the flu. The past couple of days I've been laying on the couch watching The Beatles Anthology.captsandwich wrote:Hey guys & gals.
What's new?
I don't own any others, but I've played so many of them, I can give a fair idea of them.jingle_jangle wrote:Nick I'd be interested in hearing your opinion of the humbuckers on that 5120. Do you have a FT, HT, or DeArmond-equipped Hollowbody in your arsenal to do a comparo?
Yeah, Dynas...tennis_nick wrote:I don't own any others, but I've played so many of them, I can give a fair idea of them.jingle_jangle wrote:Nick I'd be interested in hearing your opinion of the humbuckers on that 5120. If you're thinking Dynasonics, move on, they aren't close at all, they aren't supposed to be really. If you want this body style with Dearmond style Dynasonics, look for a 5129.
Comparing to stock filertrons in a 6122, they are a bit bassier sounding, they don't seem to have that indefinable quality of a cranked Filtertron, though I may just not have had it enough to find that sound/feel. I think some TVJones would be a definite improvement, but I like the stock ones anyhow. They're more like low output humbucker, which is what I'm used too.
Compared to the humbuckers in my SG, I find the Gretsch ones can be brighter, without being harsh, don't "honk" when playing clean (the bad kind of midrange honk) but are definitely lower output, much hard to overdrive even a small 15W tube amp.
But I like em!
It's a fun guitar! really hard to put down! I spoke with a friend of mine who is probably the most highly regarded soundmen in his area and he said "$400, $4000... I've never mixed a band that had a Gretsch that sounded bad in a mix.jingle_jangle wrote:
Yeah, Dynas...
I'm in agreement with you re: tone and output. I had one of the 51XX series...it was my first hollowbody Gretsch, back in 2004. A 5125, and very sweet it was. Had the Dyna 2000s and very sweet single-coils they were, with that Gretsch sound that you call "indefinable", but I call "juicy"--a mellowness of the upper-mid with a bit of forward projection.
A number of my Gretsch solidbodies (Pro Jets) were fitted with these, and I have put FTs into them. Aitch's deVille also had them; I replaced them with a Plus HT and a Supertron, both handwound by TVJones.
Seem to be just right for your needs, though. Congrats on a gorgeous geetar!

I remember that lnj was upset because everyone was trying to "keep up" (his words) with his posts, and then took exception to some of his opinions. I don't remember what happened to thinneck. I saw this as the "if you can't play by my rules I'm going to take my ball and go home" syndrome.jaymi wrote:rickenfenderampeg wrote:Wow ! it seems i wasnt seeing things after all .Ive made a mistake by logging on this site. WOW!!!! How many people have done this recently? I am getting concerned about seeing this (again)....Elnjaybass and thinneckrick were on here not long ago and they're gone.....what's going on?!?!?!?
The truth is, anyone who can't deal with others posting a different opinion shouldn't be involved in an opinion based forum in the first place.

I would postulate that we would be happy to hear your tactful and dilpomatic solution to whatever it is you see as a burning problem or issue with this forum.
Perhaps for clarity sake define the issue(s) first and then the solution(s) that you propose. I would suggest that you send Peter and I a PM, particularly if you would prefer your thoughts be held in confidence.
I agree with you on all points, but I think it's too bad that this forum can be viewed by anyone on the internet. Personally, I'd rather it be closed. I don't mind registering with my real name, but being able to find me on RRF on page 5 of a Google search for "Wes Mitchell" is a bit unsettling.admin wrote: It is easy to talk nonsense and to deliberately offend when you are posting under a name that is not your own. If people are complaining elsewhere about not being registered, would it not make sense to contact the admin here if their intentions were honourable?
