Prologue, Ashes Are Burning and Scheherazade are the others I've gotten and absorbed myself into since then. I was aware of and loved Annie Haslam's voice for many years - that was always my abiding impression of the "famous' edition of Renaissance - but I simply hadn't given any of those albums a solid listen. It's a toss-up between Cards and Ashes for being my current favourite of theirs. They really do have it all - wholesale classical re-arrangements, that beautiful voice, and, on top of everything, some of the best-sounding and most lyrical and integral roundwound Ricky bass parts there are.jps wrote:I am glad to be able to make you find a true missing gem! What else have you picked up of theirs?
Oddly, though, my favourite Renaissance song is probably "Cold Is Being" - with no bass at all!
Re: Which Celebrity Bassist Influenced You To Buy A Ric?
Here is a photo of John Allgaier at MARF III with the bass in question, which I also got quality time on.
Re: Which Celebrity Bassist Influenced You To Buy A Ric?
That's about the look I'd have on my face if I was playing John Camp's bass too!

There was a host of great melodic players that followed Macca and Squire out of the UK in the 70's.
Sadly, I don't think we'll see that creativity again...

A distinctive-sounding & looking bass guitar by the name of Rickenbacker 4001 - that's *who*!
Re: Which Celebrity Bassist Influenced You To Buy A Ric?
For me - it was also Marc Lazare,
As a kid, I was a big fan of RockFour, Marc plays bass there and I always admired the band in General and particularly Marc.
As I grew older and had the chance to get to know the guys, the "fan admiration" feeling disappeared and made way for great respect to a fellow musician. (Although I am still not that caliber, not even close...)

So long and thanks for all the fish!

"running hard" from renaissance's live at carnegie hall is a a particular fave of mine...this was the first album of theirs i listened to, and then did not get into the studio versions as much...i think it's a fantastic (double) album....the combination of live playing WITH an orchestra is just great-sort of like yes' masterworks dvd....
Re: Which Celebrity Bassist Influenced You To Buy A Ric?
I sadly have to admit that I can't listen to that track; almost every time I get to it I have to skip past it (I'll stick with Albinoni). I find that a bit with Renaissance; on any given album I'll absolutely love half the tracks and have little time for the rest. I'm still wondering what on earth Jon Camp was doing singing Kindness At The End when Annie Haslam was in the band! I think my personal favourites are Opening Out, Midas Man, Northern Lights and this, which has possibly the most perfect bass sound I've ever heard (sadly the album version sounds rather muted in comparison):pacealot wrote:Prologue, Ashes Are Burning and Scheherazade are the others I've gotten and absorbed myself into since then. BTW Bert, I like Alan Davey too; I've seen him with Hawkwind loads of times. I even saw the Hawkfest where he and Lemmy played live together. I have to say Alan sounded good, but when Lemmy came on it sounded like a plane taking off in comparison.
Re: Which Celebrity Bassist Influenced You To Buy A Ric?
I was in a band with friends while in college that did "Northern Lights". My current band, the Lemon Antennas started working on "Black Flame" but decided it really was not suitable material given most of the songs we do, as great as that song is.
Re: Which Celebrity Bassist Influenced You To Buy A Ric?
Fair enough; it is a fairly straight reading of the Adagio in Gm. But, for me, the lyrics and the organ arrangement mesh perfectly with the cold, dark tone of Side 2 of that record.henry5 wrote:I'll stick with Albinoni
I enjoy trying to spot the classical nods in (so-called) "pop" music, and I often discover new pieces as a result as well. This was one!
I suppose I must press on in my chronological pursuit of the Renaissance catalogue - I haven't gotten to Novella or later yet....
Re: Which Celebrity Bassist Influenced You To Buy A Ric?
Novella has some superb music on it, and is very etherial overall.

I was 12 years old when my older sister and brother took me to see Paul McCartney and Wings at McNichols Arena in Denver in June 1976. When I saw McCartney play a Rick, I knew even then I had to have one! I didn't know anything about models and when I went to buy a bass in 1978, they had a 4000 in Burgundyglo for $300. I bought it and still have it! Learned ALL of WINGS OVER AMERICA just for practice!!
Re: Which Celebrity Bassist Influenced You To Buy A Ric?
Well, the honest answer for me would be Squire and Rutherford, as the first band I was in played mostly Yes and Genesis covers, with some Crimson, Gentle Giant, PFM, etc. mixed in. If it hadn't been for Mike R., and our wanting to play Cinema Show, I certainly never would have acquired a 4080/12...
Having said that...it's been many years since those guys did their best work, and until a few years ago, anyone under the age of fifty who saw me playing out with my 4001 thought I was some sort of throwback dinosaur geezer...until 'Hey Ya' came out, that is. So, I cast my vote for the guy who makes me glad I kept one of my Rick's and therefore continue to score big points with all the youngsters I know: Andre 3000.
(Note to John B.: 'Don't hate...')

I didn't get where I am today by being on time...

Didn't PFM do a song called Celebration? A band I played (Ric) bass in covered that.
