I like what Alan Davey did later in Hawkwind a lot also. I like what he does in Gunslinger now also a lot. I was aware of and loved Annie Haslam's voice for many years - that was always my abiding impression of the "famous' edition of Renaissance - but I simply hadn't given any of those albums a solid listen. It's a toss-up between Cards and Ashes for being my current favourite of theirs. "Cold Is Being" is a fabulous arrangement of a dark classical piece, which I love, too. "The Harbour" from Ashes Are Burning is another great piece with not much bass on it. Jon's Rick tone is my favorite, over the usual suspects. Dave Pascoe now has the bass that was used on some of those albums. Scheherazade and Songs For All Seasons are probably my two favorite albums, although it really is hard to say which is best really, as all of their albums through SFAS have incredible music on them. Probably my favorite song is "Ocean Gypsy" from Scheherazade; I love the lyrical interplay between Annie's vocals and Jon's extremely melodic bass line. 
I sadly have to admit that I can't listen to that track; almost every time I get to it I have to skip past it (I'll stick with Albinoni). I find that a bit with Renaissance; on any given album I'll absolutely love half the tracks and have little time for the rest. I'm still wondering what on earth Jon Camp was doing singing Kindness At The End when Annie Haslam was in the band! I think my personal favourites are Opening Out, Midas Man, Northern Lights and this, which has possibly the most perfect bass sound I've ever heard (sadly the album version sounds rather muted in comparison):pacealot wrote:Prologue, Ashes Are Burning and Scheherazade are the others I've gotten and absorbed myself into since then. Oddly, though, my favourite Renaissance song is probably "Cold Is Being" - with no bass at all!
Fair enough; it is a fairly straight reading of the Adagio in Gm. But, for me, the lyrics and the organ arrangement mesh perfectly with the cold, dark tone of Side 2 of that record.henry5 wrote:I'll stick with Albinoni
