The Beatles' Second Album, Christmas 1964. We wore that one out.

I think it was either Automatic for the People by R.E.M., or Mad Mad World by Tom Cochrane. On cassette! I didn't start collecting vinyl until high school ('92-'95), when I realized that with the same amount of money, I could buy either A) a brand new CD with a radio hit, or B) about fifty vinyl LP's with gobs of radio hits.

Drag City by Jan and Dean, a Christmas gift. First I bought was Meet The Beatles. Mono. Stereo was a dollar more.

Well, it was neither an Album, or a purchase---but the first piece of music I ever had was a 45 single of Terry Jack's "Seasons in the Sun." My uncle gave it to me with a small plastic kid's record player. I later presumed it was because he liked the song years back (the song came out in like '74 .....and I got it in the late 80's..).

Cheesy as it gets, but that is still one of my favorite songs. (and yes....my family is incredibly weird. )

The first record I probably purchased was actually a cassette, and was either Vanilla Ice or Nirvana's Nevermind (god...I'm on a really bad roll here. ). Can't remember exactly..

I had Abbey Road on an 8 track from my parents. I loved that, and used to listen to it over and over; but the first album I personally bought was Kiss - Destroyer. I probably got it for the cool cover as much as anything but it always was, and still is, my favorite Kiss album. You always remember your first!

I remember the guy in the record store looked at me like I was crazy for buying it.

Well, I'm not completely sure what my first album was. We didn't have much money growing up, so stuff like that (and even things like an allowance) were pretty much out of the question 'til we had jobs and our own money. I managed to find an old reel to reel tape recorder, in the trash I think, which didn't work. After changing several tubes and a couple of other parts, I got it working. After that, I recorded friend's albums, so I had a lot of music before I ever owned an album.

Anyway, probably the first one I bought was Yes, Fragile. And all because of Roundabout. I had heard it on the radio and just had to have it. None of my friends had it yet, so I scrounged up the money and got it, promptly putting it on tape. I still have that album, and it's only been played once, maybe twice, since I just used tapes...
I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...

That's an easy one, well remembered to this day. It was March 1964 (don't remember which date!) and my parents and I went to a hi-fi stereo store on PCH in either Redondo Beach or Torrance, CA. They bought a Magnavox console stereo (our first music playing device of any kind). They got a free LP with it and chose something by the Ray Conniff singers. So, they said I could pick out an album too. I picked out Meet The Beatles hanging on the wall. When the guys delivered the console they used my LP to test it out before they left. I played the heck out of that LP but was very careful with it and still have it and it is still in quite playable condition.
Just make the time to play guitar!

First album? I think it was either Selling England by the Pound or The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway.
First record? Yellow Submarine, backed with Eleanor Rigby. I always listened to the B side.

Gary, it's wildly called "England's Newest Hit Makers". Did it come with the fold-out poster? A lot of the early ones did.

My first album was..."Please, Please Me" by The Beatles on CD. I lost it many years ago, but replaced it last year.

I know AftP was my first album... on CD. I didn't get any vinyl until I started to collect R.E.M.'s UK singles...
