Heel block – V63 vs. C64

Post by bpguitar »

I was comparing the build of my '00 V63 and '09 C64 and noticed that the heel block is significantly larger on the V63 (left side in the photo). Anyone know why? And which is closer to the original 1999? Thanks in advance, Bill

It could also be that the necks are identical but it's where the wings join the neck that makes it appear as if the heel is offset. Do the body wings join the neck at the same place on both basses? I.e. if you flip them round and look to see whether the wings join above or below the last fret on both basses.

I mention this because there's a clear difference between my two 4003's and my '74 4001 so if I look at mine from the rear side by side I see a similar offset to yours. The upper wing on my 4003's joins just before the 20th fret and the lower wing just after. Whereas on my 4001 it's just after the 19th and just before the 20th respectively. The bridges are positioned accordingly too, on the 4003's they're inset from the body edge but on the 4001 it's right up against it which ties in with the wings being positioned where they are to keep the scale length correct.

Hope this helps,
Steve.

My former '91 V63 is closer to your '00.

Bill...the one on the right of the pic is closest to my '64, but as previously said, it depends on where the wings were glued to the neck. The short wing on mine is glued 1/8" after the 20th fret. The long wing is glued between the 19th and 20th.

The C64 is more accurate to the majority of the originals, in this regard. I have photos of RM1999s that are both ways. Here's a few original examples:

note this last one is more like the V63.

Here's the front view of both basses. V63 on the left, C64 on the right. The wings appear to be glued at about the same place on the neck.

interesting that they both share a same rear pickup surround shape but the inner curve of the pickguards are different.

They do vary. My '79 has the right body wing set a little higher than the left one - the bottom of the bass has a slight angle to it.

IF memory is correct, I believe this was the same situation with the CS models as well. :?
