Suggestions for next Rick

If I had a few extra grand to blow, I would get a Pete Townshend signature model, complemented by his signature model Gibson SG.

By the way, that Ric acoustic is cooool!!

Any opinions regarding rosewood vs. maple on the Rick dreadnaughts?

Very cool, Proffjeff! I take it that your Ph.D. is in education? Mine is in Organic Chemistry (University of Illinois, Urbana-CHampaign) but I am an analytical chemist by vocation.

My 730 is the all-maple Laramie. The only rosewood acoustic I have played is my 1960s Coronet 680-D:

The Coronet is actually a fine guitar (real abalone inlays). The Laramie sounds more full, i.e. there are more overtones present compared to the Coronet. This is only a crude comparison and may not be representative of the differences between a Laramie and a Shiloh.

I'd go for the 380L PZ, the 381, or a 325c58. Of those three I've only played the last, but it had an amazing capacity for a warm, deep, almost jazzy tone.

Jeff, I tried two jumbo Ric acoustics side-by-side at Dave's Guitars in LaCrosse, WI a few years ago. The maple Comstock blew me away. It killed every Gibson, Martin, Taylor, and Guild in the place off the walls. My fellow Foglifter Tony agreed. The rosewood jumbo was very pretty, but sounded dead and dry as toast in comparison to its sister. It could have been due in part to dead strings, but the maple Ric was breathtaking in sound and appearance. I still hate myself for not buying it.

I agree with Noel; the Comstock is an awesome acoustic guitar with its own unique sound: crisp and bright and percussive, and very loud as well, even though mine does not have the electronic pickup. It is truly an incredible-sounding guitar, and feels absolutely wonderful to play....and it looks just as good as it sounds--mine is Fireglo, but I bet one in Monty would be beautiful, too.
