Re: 4001 or 4003
A friend here picked up a 2010 4003 because he liked my '80 4001 ( a lot ) . The neck on the new one is about as close to my '80 as you could get , in fact they feel about the same . I was quite surprised to see just how close they felt .
Mine sports an ancient set of flats and his has rounds so it's hard to compare the sound .
The new ones are gorgeous , the older ones are too .

Re: 4001 or 4003
Having had both a 4001 and 4003, I'd lean towards a 4003. It's tone is not quite a versatile as a 4001 but I think they are built a little tougher and of course the truss rods adjust easier. I'd also buy new. I think current production is some of the best quality ever made and with the push/pull tone pot you can get very close to the old 4001 sound. Now if they only offered a current "s" model I would have bought new!

I'd have to go with my 4001 -I've had it since '74 and just got finished adding a Horseshoe and a Toaster to it! What's not to like. Still my fave neck on a bass!
