Not difficult at all. Many of my multicolor bursts use opaque deep brown or opaque black at the edges, usually so the binding can really "pop" visually.
On the other hand I think traditional "sunbursts" (like FG) are just one finish color applied repeatedly in "concentrics", with some added black depending on the finisher.
Fireglo is one color sprayed in different passes until the desired depth is reached at the edges. The old "ClownGlo" usually featured one pass, and was quick but unsubtle. Eric's gone back to carefully-shaded bursts. Other bursts (from other manufacturers) use two or more colors. My Aquaglo bursts started out as one color and the newer have four.
Just imagine a guitar that looked like a JG on the periphery but had AFG's creamy center, or worse yet MG. I can't picture that in a nice way. Sort of like a tobacco-meets-tweed burst at best.
The colors might look strange, but after seeing the Tobacco-burst bass that Eric did, I believe it can be done attractively, but would need a transitional maroon area, I think.
