I'm no finish expert, but what would you have in mind? Like a Gibson Les Paul Silverburst?

Or maybe a blackish tint that shows the wood grain in the middle but gets solid on the edges?
Remember Blueburst, I think the second option is more probable.

And I agree with John Hall that it would look awful. Personally I have never liked blackbursts or trans-blacks-over-figured-tops of any kind.

Maybe black hardware and checkerboard binding can help.

Horrible fashion, perchance? Sounds really awful - even if you mean the guitar has a black edge (green to black etc).

What would be much more interesting is metallic orange to MID or something like that - that would really be spectacular, imo!

Werner, did you never see the blue-to-black one-off bass? That's the basis of John's argument. Basically, a black "burst" is only worth looking at if there's another color to sit in the background. I think some AFGs and FGs are done this way (the newer ones that look like smoke), not sure.

Yes, I think of the "burst" as having the primary color on the outside and then working to the center. I suppose that must mean that all "bursts" are really "implosions" to me. Orange to MID? I'll take that too!
Can we have everything louder than everything else?

Ilan,

I think you just proved JH's argument with those pictures. That quick bit of photoshopping has really shown me how ugly it would be. Even the black hardware can't save it!
IMO, it looks like a charred piece of wood! Oh well, on the upside, it leaves me in totaly supsense on what the next COY will be. Hopefully we won't have to wait to 2012 to find out. Anybody care to wager a guess on this...

Just to throw my two cents worth...

I have a Jetburst 4004Cii in my office that was done as a UV top coat/color experiment two years ago. It isn't impressive at all! From just a few feet away it just looks like JG. At first, I thought it might be good for a one-off, but after pondering it, I came to the conclusion that it would have been a stretch!

I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...

cassius987 wrote:I can see the Jetburst failing because it would be very difficult, to me, to actually do a "burst" blend just using black.
Not difficult at all. Many of my multicolor bursts use opaque deep brown or opaque black at the edges, usually so the binding can really "pop" visually.
On the other hand I think traditional "sunbursts" (like FG) are just one finish color applied repeatedly in "concentrics", with some added black depending on the finisher.

Fireglo is one color sprayed in different passes until the desired depth is reached at the edges. The old "ClownGlo" usually featured one pass, and was quick but unsubtle. Eric's gone back to carefully-shaded bursts. Other bursts (from other manufacturers) use two or more colors. My Aquaglo bursts started out as one color and the newer have four.
Just imagine a guitar that looked like a JG on the periphery but had AFG's creamy center, or worse yet MG. I can't picture that in a nice way. Sort of like a tobacco-meets-tweed burst at best.

The colors might look strange, but after seeing the Tobacco-burst bass that Eric did, I believe it can be done attractively, but would need a transitional maroon area, I think.

Yeah, but I'd bid on it!

Maybe someone has photoshop and could try examples of your suggestions - I've been wondering if maybe some black edged but darker center colour might not work anyway... mmm... I wonder how bad a Black-Greyburst would look? :D

Nah, I mean real grey, not silver.

The only actual Silverburst LP I've had in my hands had only silver - no black or other colour to be seen in the "burst"
