It might not sound awful although the pickups being so close to each other kind of bugs me. Slanted pickups are cool although I've always thought it would sound better if they slanted in the opposite direction than these. In any case it wouldn't be all that hard to restore for someone who desired to.

I would fix and play the (*^*&%&*)(* out of it. New pickups and a pickguard would probably cover most of the issues....

Agreed. The droopy curtain look of the bass side of the guard is disturbing.

What do you do if you LOVE the feel, playability, build quality, and looks of a Rickenbacker, but the range of tones just doesn't get what you're after???

Fortunately for me, I'm able to keep the Ric police off my case by way of a '92 toaster and '06 adjustable pole high gain.

BTW - the pickups are slanted in order for the Fender-spaced poles to line up with the strings. Pickguard does need work.

I halfway like the slanted pickups too I just wish they weren't touching! Looks weird and limits tonal options.

Could be touching to make a quasi humbucker.

Slanting them appears to have been to align the pole pieces with the string spacing.Placing them together may be a backwoods humbucker attempt.
The mods may have been done at a time when Rics were at a low point in the desirability/value factor.
(I've read about such a time,but never personlly experienced it)
