Quick R.E.M. related question: You know that song that Stipe did with Matthew Sweet "Tainted Obligation" under the name Community of Trolls that pops up on all sorts of bootlegs - was that ever officially released anywhere? I'd love to have an excellent recording of the song since it is one of my favorites and the ones on bootlegs aren't that great.

There's actually several versions of that album - some have the shorter, cut down version of the song, others the full length, plus added applause!
The applause bothers me - why create a fake live song?

Thanks guys! I'll look into it. Sometimes you just get used to, and sometimes even prefer, a little tape hiss or noise. I''ll have to go back and listen to my recording and compare with the cleaned up version. I just always wished there was an official version, but sometimes you have to be careful what you wish for.

I figured I'd throw out my own R.E.M. story. I love the early stuff, but didn't get to see them until '95 in St. Louis, on my golden birthday no less! Radiohead opened and played "The Bends" album all the way through. The crowd was indifferent and Stipe chided them for it. He also was ****** becausse he went to H.S. in the STL area and there was a picture of him in drag as Rocky at the Rocky Horror Picture Show printed in a local paper. I laughed out loud, because it was at the same place I used to hang out at and watch it. I remember they played So. Central Rain and I heard they only played it 3 times on the whole tour! It was a surreal evening for any number of reasons!
Also, Mike Mills is one of the greatest rock bassists of all time. He went a LONG way to really giving R.E.M. something special that I believe was no small part of their success.

Slightly off topic... We Walk live... I was looking for guitar tabs - one claims guitar tuned down 1/4, another 1/2.

I doubt Peter Buck does any detuning live? Anyone any idea where I might find a decent tab of this song?

He has always done the downtuning of high e to d for Gardening at night, Windout and 9-9 during live shows. He has also used the Burgundyglo 330 for alternative tunings during the last few years. But no "full detuning" as far as I know.

I was re-reading and I was unclear, I decided... PLB picks strings, doesn't strum, so figuring out what he does exactly is too much work for lazy me.

That said, I got two official tab versions of Losing My Religion - both are different!

I'm brand new to the forum and couldn't resist the subject matter. Growing up in Georgia, I was introduced to R.E.M.s music as a teenager. I have loved their music ever since. Especially the IRS stuff. I started college at Valdosta State in south Georgia. A band named the Unknowns lived right in front of us. The members included: Mark Neill on guitar, Dave Doyle on bass, and Craig Packham on drums. Bruce Joyner was their lead singer. They played every Thursday night at a local pub. Those were some of my favorite times. Bruce and I became good friends. I told him I liked R.E.M.s music and he said he knew Peter Buck. He said Peter had produced some of their music. I transferred to UGA in 1992, and my first day in Athens I saw Mike Mills at the Globe. That night I went out to see Bruce Joyner and his new band Out of the Fire. Bruce had told me that Peter Buck might come see them play, for they knew each other from back in the day. I thought....yeah right. Well sure enough, Pete comes strolling in about 12:30 in the morning. Well of course being star struck, I didn't want to seem like a tool and bother him. After Bruce and the boys finished their set Pete went over to talk with Bruce and the band for a while. I went over to tell Bruce how much I enjoyed the show and he introduced me to Pete. What a thrill....I think I blabbed something about really digging their music. He said he had taken Berry out to dinner for her birthday that night. He seemed like a really nice fellow. Not bad for my first day in Athens, GA. R.E.M. is one of my favorite bands and one of the best live bands I've ever seen. Not bad for college dropouts living in a condemned church.
If you ever get a chance, check out The Unknowns album "Southern Decay". Mark Neill played a Ric 381 on some/most of the songs. One of my favorite records in my collection. Mark lives in California and recently produced a record for a band called the Black Keys.
