What are the diff. in 330 & 325 Pups?

Post by JackAlan »

I should receive my first Ric (330 JG) tomorrow. My question is one from ignorance with Ric's and is on PUP's. I'm presuming the 2001 330 will have Hi-gain pups and my hopeful sound for a Ric (at least at the moment is a Bealtles/CCR sounding 325). Are the Ric pups all single coil or Humbuckers or 325 single coil & 330 Higain humbuckers?

Also, I see things about the resistance on the coils 12k vs 7k etc. and understand this is just the more or less windings that affect both the sound & output. My questions are:

For the most vintage sound am I presuming correctly that "Toaster 7k" are the ticket for that Beatles/CCR Ric sound of the 60's?

Are the Pups a swap out deal or a route/cut/swap deal?

Is it dumb to unwind coils to get a sound?

What are the benefits/costs for having a "toaster vintage vs. Hi-gain pup setup" in my guitar?

Thanks for the help. Don't want to dick anything up or ruin it's resale value. Of course I will play like it is (maybe for a week or two ) before I would get the urge to mess with anything. Any advice of been there/done that would be appreciated. I'm so excited for a Ric? I have some Gretsch gits & Casino Elitest along with a new Gibby J-160e 1962 Reissue for my Beatles fix. The Ric sound will round that out. :D

Any modern Ric guitar mentioning VIntage Pickups uses the Scatterwound Toasters. Single coils.
The 325s all have these Toasters. Most Ric enthusiasts feel Toasters will give you that Beatles and 60s era vintage sound. A lot of us think Toasters look the coolest too !!!! 8)

The 330 models come standard with High Gains, which are Single Coils, but as the name implies, more output and gain than the vintage Toasters. I believe the HGs are ceramic magnet. High Gains also deliver that jangle sound too.... a lot comes down to which style of amp you use. There are many advocates of High Gains here on the Forum ....

Ric makes a seperate Humbucker, the HB1s.... today they come standard on 650 model guitars and the 4004 series Basses. You can see all the Ric pickups on the company website Boutique page. http://www.rickenbacker.com/cart.asp?category=Pickups Another style of Ric Humbucker appeared on the older 480 series guitars.

All three Ric pickups styles can be interchanged without routing. They are the same size. Toasters require the rubber mounting grommets and High Gains and HB1s use the foam mounting pads.

Re unwinding pickups -- I saw some threads here on the Forum strongly cautioning AGAINST doing this. (In fact it was JH from RIC advising against this). Do a search on that topic for more details.

i think you can find dozens of threads here on the RRF about the different pickups and the preferances people have. Congrats on your new Ric arriving !! Enjoy ! :D And remember that JetGlo rocks !!!

Also, for capturing that vintage sound -- you might want to look up RRF threads on Compressors in general and the Janglebox in particular.

higains have metal impregnated rubber magnets like the teacher had in school or fridge magnet ads, not a ceramic base such as high powered guitar pickups such as dimarzio, gibson dirty fingers, etc. which were very brittle and cracked when struck or tighted on too much.

All of the pickups can use the foam ring, or the rubber grommets. The grommets will be more suceptable to feeback. I have the foam rings on my 330 with toasters, after not liking the way the grommets looked.
The new higains,(adjustable pole pieces) that RIC has are much clearer and responsive than the button top ones that came on my guitar stock(2005). They also dirty up better, and the clean sound is crisp.
The toasters have a nice, clean sound, and overdive mellowly, but, I would dare to say, that the new higains are more versatile.
Either way, you will be well in the ballpark.
Enjoy your new guitar!
