Here's an idea, an Audere 3ZB wired V/V + Treble/Bass + LoMid/HiMid. Just a thought, since you're looking for all sorts of tones in one bass. Since you don't have to worry about preserving Ric-O-Sound or anything it should be an easy conversion.

Just to throw an option into the mix for the toggle have you considered wiring it as a simple "on-off" kill switch? Since you are keeping the V/V/T layout you don't "need" pickup selection through the toggle. When JPS wired my LK for V/V/V/T he suggested the kill switch and it has proven to be quite useful.

LOL....Yes, but if you're dead set against drilling the hole oversized for use with a pot and it's gonna be sittin' there anyway, I guess that's one use for it. Nikki Sixx has one on his Gibson Blackbird bass, but that's the ONLY control it has, so it's kinda cool.

Wow, I never thought of that!

I'm not saying it's the best solution but it does come in handy.....especially on gigs. On my LK, for example, with the three pickups blended just right turning each down after a song and getting it just right for the next can be a minor hassle. Certainly not a big deal but pairing pickups on the toggle for the LK is kinda useless so, to me, it's the best option. I could see it being useful on a two pickup 4004 as well.

When I'm done with a set, I turn my amp off or hit the mute button on my tuner. Been doin' that since the 70's.

It's just a question of location, location, location. Same as onboard EQ. I mean, you can just use your amp's EQ ultimately, but for some reason some folks want it on their instrument. And power to them. I used to have a Ric set up that way and I won't knock it, but I didn't really need it that badly either. It's passive now. The main thing that I liked about active was how the impedance buffering made the HB-1s sound, but the EQ was sort of an "extra".

That's the plan I have for the 4004Cjjv2, when it gets the third pickup installed. It'll have a stacked pot V/T for each pickup, losing the stock switch to make room for the 3rd pot, then on the back control cover have individual coil split switches for each pickup (like the v1 has), a stereo/mono switch (as on the v1), and a switch that, when in stereo, selects which pickup the middle pickup is paired with. I'll just use the volume knobs if I want to turn a pickup off...
