Yes, once upon a time you could order a Rickenbacker without a case.

In 1982 or so, I went to the DC to pick up a new White 4001 (or 4003, memory is fuzzy) for a friend that was on tour and getting ready to go play in Australia....I got to unpack the bass myself from the RIC shipping box and check it out. For the tour, he ordered a new Calzone flight case from another store and he was set to go.

I think John Hall may be the one who made the change in the mid 80's that all instruments are shipped in factory cases---maybe he will chime in.....

When I bought my first Ric bass, sometime in the early-mid 80's, I was VERY surprised to hear the salesman say----"This doesn't come with a case."

THAT, to me, did not make ANY sense....especially since the price was more than I could afford.

I have since encountered this with OTHER guitar manufacturers. WHY do they do it??????
To my way of thinking, if you're willing/able to shell out a good amount of money for a guitar, the case
SHOULD be included!!!!!!!!

Also my first Rick bass in 1979 did not come with case. Luckily I had a matching case from my previous Aria Fakenbacker

, that I had kept.

So my first real Rick was kept safe in a form fitted case, but which fact did not save it from fingerboardsplit

due to brilliant Kramer steel strings, one year later.

I believe I heard somewhere "BoxStore" center was starting to "sell cases separate"..... maybe thats why they are not a RIC dealer anymore.
