There's a lot of folks now in their '30s who remember dancing to "Eternal Flame" at their proms... That song holds a lot of memories for them! It could be dismissed as MOR/interchangeable artist material, but remember that Susanna co-wrote it.

The sleeve for the UK single presents the Bangles at their most striking:

Don't kill the messenger, tell off Vicki!

That is an awesome pic of the girls, Paul. I wish it were bigger.

JakeK wrote:The boxed set came in, and I enjoy it. All Over the Place is a kick ash record and captures what the band wanted to be famous for. Different Light is okay some great stuff and some average stuff. The best song on that album is Vicki's "Return Post". Everything is the White Album of The Bangles, some good stuff, some GREAT stuff and some garbage. Vicki said "Eternal Flame" is a great song, but it wasn't any real band involvement and Whitney Houston could have had a hit with it. I hope to acquire the '04 return Doll Revolution pretty soon here, as I've heard it captures the original spirit of the band, similar to All Over the Place.
My ears hear two or three of the other ladies doing the background harmonies to Susanna's Eternal Flame lead vocal. At their core, the Bangles were/are a vocal band. Having seen them live a couple of times, as well as viewing some live DVD footage, my personal belief is that they were often 'helped' instrumentally (ala the Beach Boys using the Wrecking Crew) in the studio. I don't have any problem with that, if it's true. But, if all four voices are responsible for the lush vocals on Eternal Flame, it seems that there was TYPICAL band involvement on the song.
Back when they were popular, I had to constantly defend them to most of my 'snob' musician friends. The comment I'd always hear was that the band was nothing special; "fluff". Musically, there might be some merit to that argument, but vocally, they did some impressive and very beautiful (and sometimes tricky) things. Tom

paologregorio wrote:Jake, if you can find it, I suggest looking for the first EP (five songs, IIRC, on I.R.S.)with their first bassist Annette Zilinskas. Cool stuff on that one as well. :D

Somewhere I have a "mini CD" with three of the five songs from that EP.

I remember seeing them before "All over the place" came out, and they rocked. Their first ep is killer, love "How is the air up there?". The whole Paisley Underground thing in LA in the early 80s was really cool. I first saw Paul there playing bass in his band 10 Tons of Lies, and then years later meet him here again on the forum. Small world.

Jake, lotsa old goodies on youtube if you look.

I only played bass during our rendition of "White Rabbit." The rest was guitar. :)

Michael Steele sat through one of our sets one night.

On another night, when Redd Kross played and all of the Bangles were there (Vicki was going out with one of the Mcdonald brothers from Redd Kross, who ended up later marrrying Charlotte Caffey of the Go Gos', which is an odd coincidence b/c on one of the Go Go's reunion tours, Vicki filled in for a very pregnant Charlotte Caffey-ha), I got to stand next to Susanna Hoffs for a bit-I made her nervous so I moved.. . . I also couldn't place her. I kept thinking, "I know this girl, what's her name. . . did I go to school with her, jeez why can't I remember her name?" As soon as I walked outside, I realized, "Holy smokes! I was just standing next to Susanna Hoffs!" What was even nuttier about that was that at the time, she was my fave Bangle. Nuts.

'Different light' and 'Everything' are marvelous albums.
They are slightly 'spoiled' by the presence of annoying songs like Eternal Flame
(merely because it's overplayed) and Walk like an Egyptian (too much of a novelty
song).

Don't forget to buy Doll Revolution. A great album. They need to release more material.

You did better than me. I don't think I'd be able to form any sort of coherent thought.

Just found a picture of I really like, it's nothing like the "Eternal Flame" sleeve PW posted, but holds it own:

I also found a used, near mint copy of Doll Revolution on Amazon with bonus "Making of" DVD for ridiculously cheap. Since some folks have given it good reviews on this thread, I'm probably gonna pull the trigger.

Never got around to saying it, so here goes:

Doll Revolution kicks ash. It brings the band to a more mature level, they're no longer the glossy, poppy Bangles, but more laid back and mature. Terrific album, don't hesitate to get this one.
