Besides me not being a US citizen, I'm still thinking I just bought yet another bass (i'm on 16 now, of which 11 are Rickenbacker's). I should not buy another bass.antipodean wrote:I'm still trying to work out what's so obscene about such a great deal....and wishing I lived stateside.....

Quite true. I didn't think of that. But on the other hand, at the store you have both the ability to negotiate and then get instant gratification.beatbyrd wrote:Great, but at that Sam Ash store, they'll charge you sales tax if you buy anythingHalbert wrote:For me, Sam Ash is one street over and two blocks west of my office ( which I believe is in New York!)beatbyrd wrote:I'd have to look more closely at Samash.com (which I believe is in Florida) if MF moves.

Of course, all of you know that in most states that have sales taxes, even though the on-line retailer is not required to collect those taxes from you, you are still required to pay the taxes to your state...Halbert wrote:Quite true. I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...

How coincidental. I just sold one to pay for another I already bought. The last thing I needed was yet another one this week.berth wrote:Besides me not being a US citizen, I'm still thinking I just bought yet another bass (i'm on 16 now, of which 11 are Rickenbacker's). Re: Obscene Musicians Friend Sale
How double coincidental. I too just sold a bass to pay for this one, and it's on it's way to Italy.

California and Amazon.com are currently dancing around that tax issue. By the way, I have never been able to swing great discounts at a brick and mortar music store. The larger online music 'stores' are usually very motivated sellers and routinely offer a combination of great service, free delivery, low prices, no sales tax, and well stocked inventory. I also like the fact that my 330/6, 360/6, and 360/12 all came in the original unopened boxes that they had been packed in by RIC. There was Santa Ana factory air in each box, along with the new guitar smell. They were all in cherry condition (actually, CherryGlo condition). They hadn't been hanging on a store wall, rented out to a local band, or manhandled by some 13 year old thrash metal fan on Saturday afternoon. Not that there's anything wrong with that......cjj wrote:Of course, all of you know that in most states that have sales taxes, even though the on-line retailer is not required to collect those taxes from you, you are still required to pay the taxes to your state...

It's already a done deal and many good people have left in the last few weeks. In fact, 100% of the people we've been dealing with there have chosen to move on elsewhere.beatbyrd wrote:Great deal on the bass, for those who took advantage of it. I was toying with the idea and called them on Monday. I asked how many they had and was told that they were not allowed to disclose quantities. The gentleman then said that they had a "couple of handfuls", which I took to mean between 10 and 20 (2 sets of 5? 2 sets of 10?). I am hoping that they stay where they are and do not move to CA. They will have to charge sales tax and will lose a bunch of business, at least from me. Also, their experienced reps are pretty flexible with discounts, if you speak with the right ones. I'd have to look more closely at Samash.com (which I believe is in Florida) if MF moves. Congrats to all of the new bass owners. Tom
With Musician's Friend, you're already paying sales tax in Utah, Indiana, Missouri, California, and Washington State. However, it's a moot point, as I personally think you'll be paying sales tax on online purchases in every state within a year. Obviously no one is paying the use tax they are supposed to be paying now, so it just has to change.

How coincidental. I sold one last weekend to finance one already bought also. I'm afraid my girlfriend does not want to buy me another Rick though. Even if it is my favorite colour....qwezirider wrote:How coincidental. I just sold one to pay for another I already bought. The last thing I needed was yet another one this week.

Wow, 15+ buyers on Talkbass alone, and they are quoting prices not much more than a grand. You lucky MID fans! Enjoy your new basses.

Re: Obscene Musicians Friend Sale
I lied to myself because I said I'd never buy another new Rickenbacker bass (different things lead to this conclusion, but I do already have three...), but I decided I couldn't pass this one up. I wish I had thought about getting in on the 10% before it expired, but I was too late!! (Monty Python's "The Bishop" reference, anyone?). If I don't like it, I figure I should be able to sell it for what I paid for it, and if I do like it...well, I'll have to figure out what to do with one of the other three
I'm really looking forward to seeing the full width inlays.

I'm not a fan of taxes, but I wouldn't mind this as much if I paid sales tax in the state where the seller is. I don't understand why NC should get sales tax if the item I bought was in another state. By the same token, the use tax here is setup so that if I go and physically buy something in another state and drive back across the border, I am supposed to pay the difference in sales tax to NC.

If the tax you paid is higher than that in NC would you get a refund?nukebass wrote:...the use tax here is setup so that if I go and physically buy something in another state and drive back across the border, I am supposed to pay the difference in sales tax to NC.
