Definite WOW factor on that one. Enjoy Kev
Re: 1969 4001
Thanks for the info guys.
Keeping on the rails as it were, its great to see a great looking bass like this 1969 4001 bacause we see so many early 70s pieces and theres any number of threads regarding RMs etc.
But the period from 1966-70 is very intriguing in that the 4001 was slowly evolving and the round heel and volute seemed to creep in while no one was looking!
What does she sound like through a well cranked up amp?

Re: 1969 4001
I haven't run it through my "big" amp, but it sounds great through my V4-B and a 2X10 cab cranked up. (which is plenty loud!)
Someone asked how it compares to my 21 fretter. I was messing with both of them over the weekend, and in a nut-shell, the '69 is warmer and more open, and the '71 has much more hi-end and tight sounding. May have to do with the pu positions (?).

With the exception of the "more hi-end", that was essentially the difference between your old/my 21 fretter and my fave '72.

Re: 1969 4001
The horseshoe pups were gone in mid-68.
Re: 1969 4001
Wints had a Feb '69 4001 with a serial# 5 digits after this one that had a factory HS, but his Dec (?) '68 has a Hi-gain. So, there was definitely a phase out period.johnallg wrote:The horseshoe pups were gone in mid-68.
I would like to try out the Lollar in this bass, though there's nothing wrong with the HG in it now.
Re: 1969 4001
Kevin, did you check the pot date codes yet...? Curious how close they are to the dates in my own '69....
Re: 1969 4001
Not yet, but I'm running home for lunch in a little bit and will open 'er up for a peak.

The 3 I could see are "6808".leftybass wrote:Kevin, did you check the pot date codes yet...? Curious how close they are to the dates in my own '69....

Ahh. That is what is in my '69 as well, and I think it was Andy who also had one like that... Good to know.teeder wrote:The 3 I could see are "6808".leftybass wrote:Kevin, did you check the pot date codes yet...? Curious how close they are to the dates in my own '69....
Re: 1969 4001
I had IB 101, which was one # before Kev's old MG 4000, (that also had a hi-gain) and that did have a HS, which is the latest bass I know of, which I can definitely authenticate. Pot codes were 6808 as well, and I'm sure if I opened the hood on my Dec '68, (which I have never done) they would be the same as well...teeder wrote:Wints had a Feb '69 4001 with a serial# 5 digits after this one that had a factory HS, but his Dec (?) Andy's welcome to post pics of my old Jan. '69 Burgundyglo. That one was #IA-007, and according to my old notes, were also using 6808 pots. Also had the green first gen. hi-gain treble pu. Would love to know where that bass went after CME got it 10 yrs. ago!!!!
