Well, that makes me feel better, I guess...

Now, how to manage getting that lucky...

I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...

I can't recall seeing a standard 4003 bass like this in over the last 10 years. Anyone?

As impressive as the body is, and it is impressive, the "orange" board doesn't seem to do it justice. A darker grain would have really highlighted that magnificent body.

JB quotes from the seller, that this was a custom order, so, can one can assume that they are the original owner?

Ah, Thanks Evan...had forgotten about that one. That too was spectacular. Generally speaking, we have seen precious little of this standard of wood for many years, making the original, alleged quote from JB most interesting...

I hope he doesn't mind that I'm quoting him here, but what the heck:
In 2000, I had Rickenbacker create a flamed 4001v63 bass. Even John Hall mentioned that it is a rare instrument.

It sheds some light. Maybe a serial number can shed even more?

Rare, sure, but as I said, we don't take orders like this. I might do it for a close friend, but otherwise it's the luck of the draw.

I won't tell you the Sept. 97 is slimmer than your old May 93. Nope, I won't tell you that.

Awesome. And I'm thinking the upper bout in particular looks slim.
