That's essentially what I did with my '74 4001 (pup wise). If yours doesn't have it (I can' t remember when they were issued) you might consider a push pull pot for the cap bypass... can be quite dynamic. That is a sweet looking bass!

Right. It does have the push pull pot- I was amazed at the additional tonal ranges, and quite readily use them when I play.

Thanks- I was actually inspired to go to a local guitar shop that has 2 4003s on the wall (unmodified)---and wow. I really think that although they sounded great, I really like my tone more.

Awesome MG, John!!! I use ghs boomers 45-100 rounds on my bass. I have yet to try flats.
