I was a forum member here first and have never felt a need to join the company forum. One forum has always been enough for me. I've always enjoyed everyone and all the discussions here. I have taken a peak at the company forum from time to time though.

This is a most interesting thread - and one that has come up a number of times in varying forms during my 8 years here.

Regarding this forum, I believe that it's quite simple. If you have signed up it's assumed that you are aware of the rules regarding posting. Because there are rules you can't expect that the right to 'free speech' exists. It doesn't - simply because the rules state that there are limitations.

The owner of this forum (Peter) has the right to set the environment. The great majority of members here understand that and respect it. We should also respect the fact that the owner of the brand (RIC) that is discussed here also has rights.

Live with it or live without out..... I believe that it's your choice.

Oops! Seems like my post of a few days ago raised some serious heckles and issues. So, in answer to a few of the members on the Forum (particularly Collin, John and Paul), let me just explain:

Since I retired two years ago and caught a serious dose of RAS, my collection of Rics has grown far beyond what I had planned - the fulfilment of a lifetime interest in these fantastic instruments. So what is the connection with the Forum? Well, as a collector rather than a serious player, it is clear that much of the enjoyment comes from both owning these guitars and associating with others who share that enthusiasm. In short, I have come to realise that one cannot operate in a vacuum, divorced from other collectors and enthusiasts – which is why the Rickenbacker Resource Forum is an important reference point for my collecting – a bit like an extended ‘family’, which I consult on an almost daily basis.

It is in this spirit that I have been happy to share some photos of my Ric guitars – e.g. under the topics of ’Ric 650 Models’ and, more recently, ’Black Trim’.

I’m not sure whether I qualify as a ‘bomb-throwing troll’, but even if justified, I am not aware that I have broken any RRF rules – unless speaking your mind in a somewhat candid and direct fashion in an offence/offense (in which case, I am probably guilty as charged!). I do believe that it is still possible to have freedom of speech, within defined parameters.

However, like many people in this world, I have my own personal demons and occasionally these manifest themselves in ways which can cause unintended hurt to others.

Two final points: With regards to defections from the RRF and allegations that people are disposing of Ric guitars due to disaffection with the RRF and/or the brand, please note that these are views which I have picked up anecdotally – I am not a member of any other Forum and neither am I in contact with other RRF members in the UK in any kind of systematic way.

Secondly, in answer to the original question of this Topic? Well. I am also a member of the Rickenbacker Corporation Forum, which I would consult periodically and have found to be an excellent source of information.

And finally …… yes Kira, it probably is good to take a break sometimes and come back with a fresh perspective, but at my age, I can’t be sure to remember to come back again!
Santa visits only once a year, but Santa Ana delivers Rics all year round.

The RRF has been in existence since 2000 so it has now been here for 12 years. It has been through the kindness of so many that it has survived over these years. I thank all the contributors, moderators and friends past and present who have made my job much lighter because of their hard work.

I am the one who started this forum and who has made the rules over the years. So should their be any finger pointing that needs to be done I accept that they should all be pointed in my direction. The number of rules did grow over the years and I made them. There were too many and thanks to generous critiques you can count our current number of rules on one hand.

I want to thank each and everyone for their patience while I have been finding my way as an admin. It is somewhat more difficult that one might expect. I like to think that I have listened to all who have disagreed with my actions and that I have met them half way on many occasions. Should I have fallen short please accept my apology. But, I am the bottom line here and I am responsible for the RRF climate and rules with others only trying to hold the line on policies that I have felt were right.

I continue to learn every day. I do think that showing respect for others is central to this forum and a fair amount of dissension has occurred when trying to step in to settle disagreements between members. I have not always been successful in this regard and this has been my failure. Nonetheless, it is I and I alone who am responsible for the rules. Should you feel hard done by please contact me directly and I will do my level best to set things right. Please do not blame moderators who were doing their level best to carry out my wishes.

The RRF door is always open to suggestions and critiques. Please let me know how I can help. Together we are stronger. Everyone has a voice here as long as it is respectful. I do hope the moderators over the years will forgive me for any undeserved criticism that they may have received while trying to carry out my agenda.

Peter, you've made a great forum, not that my opinion matters to you or anything, it is just the snobbishness of some members that get to people I think. Just because someone has a Rickenbacker doesn't mean they are of a higher social rank. I have no problem with the rules you put forth whatsoever, it is the way people enforce the rules that get to me. In all honesty that makes a bad name for the forum and reflects badly on you. I know that you're not like that, but to outside viewers, it scares them away.
I feel like this post will get deleted, but please don't do it, I'm saying this in a very civilized manner, and Peter if you would like to take this to private messages, that's fine
by me. Thank you.

Hi Ivan. IMO, if you believe that an injustice was done to you, you should take it to PMs with the person in question and try to straighten it out privately; one on one. Be patient and neutral in your tone. Speak to people the way you would like them to speak to you. Right or wrong, if you whine publicly, you will draw attention to that and away from the injustice. The righteous anger that folks may feel about your injustice will be replaced with anger at someone who is apparently losing control of their own emotions. This is true in any venue; here, work, school, the malt shop, etc.

And, no, I'm not calling you a whiner. Before you start any battles, ask yourself, "What will this matter in a day, a week, a month?".

I agree Tom that contacting me directly is preferable should a discussion with a moderator be unfruitful. Making broad sweeping public statements that are vague has the potential to hurt others. Your comments are appreciated.

Ivan, by all means contact me privately. This would be the kind and respectful thing to do. If you have been hurt by comments then please accept that you too have the potential to do the same.

I look forward to your PM.

Howard has it right in my view. There are some rules that limit how far we can go in our expression. I cannot let comments stand that hurt others. All we have is one another.

As we go forward I would ask that those who have problems with moderating contact me should they feel unable to discuss the matter with moderators directly.

I've been on some forums on the net (which will remain anonymous) that have no control and some that have too much control, and this forum has a happy medium. Peter and Brian make this forum operate in the good way that it does. If it weren't for them, I probably would have left the forum permanently back in January, but they convinced me to come back and stay. They are good guys and great friends, and if I'm ever having a problem, they're always here to help. All of our moderators, consultants and admins do their best to make this forum a great place. And I don't think they're doing a bad job.

That said, if I left the forum, would I have sold my two Rickenbackers? No, because they're two very unique instruments in many ways and add some more diverse flavors to my (so it's been called) amazing collection of stringed instruments. And is there a better 12-string electric than a Rickenbacker? No way! No 12-string electric has that special something that a Ric has. If there are going to be people who load off a Rickenbacker collection due to participation on a forum, they probably were never a fan of Rickenbacker to begin with.

Nobody chastise me, this is just my two cents.
