When did '72 4001s (in any condition) start going for $3700??? In my experience, looking for one from that time period or older, since about 1996, I've found they usually would sell in the $1500-$1700 range, tops.... It has been a year or so since I was in the habit of perusing ebay on a daily basis for Ricks, but that is an astounding amount of money that it sold for, in my humble opinion...

Thanks for the vote of confidence Ted. I knew when I did this deal I'd probably take a bit of a beating here on the forum.
Guys, all I can say is that it was worth it for me.
If you all think I'm nuts... so be it. I've sure been accused of that before!
I have wanted this exact bass for longer than you all know, looked for quite some time, and finally had enough... To me it is really not about the deal financially, so much as it is about the deal emotionally. That's the deal I always try to live by. For a guy that's 56 years old, and at the end of his playing career, to own this bass, and to be involved in the "Staberow" 4003 project is very much a special time in my life.
Sometimes ones heart just gets in the way...
Thanks,
Marty

Congrats Marty. The price may have been high, but it looks like the quality is as well. I don't think you're nuts. What's the list price on a new Les Paul Custom these days? Something like $4500.00? Try to find another Rick like this. When I saw it last night my jaw dropped and I had a hard time not pressing that button. Sometimes I need to forget about logic and go with the heart! (bigger stones would help too!)
The guy answered all my questions and gave me some more photos before you hit the BIN button. It turns out that the bass belonged to his grandfather, who was the original owner. The photos showed no lifting of the fretboard near the nut. The nut is original and I think the pickguard is also, as his gramps said nothing was ever changed from new. This one is the real deal.
I'm happy to see that it went to someone who will appreciate it. It sounds like you've been after one like this longer than I have.
Let me know if you change your mind.

Hey guys,
Thanks very much for such kind words. Yes, the heart is in control here, not always the best of situations, but sometimes I just cannot help it.
Jeff;
Thanks for the info on the bass. What great news! Grandpa! That is me! From one old geezer to another I guess...funny huh? I guess destiny is going to keep this bass out of the head bangin' bar scene for sure!
Re: the Yfoil... and sorry to go off thread here;
Jeff, you must be an old roadie (as in road bicycles)?
Yes. 25 Lbs ago, I used to race bicycles. When I got to old for that, I turned to the Trek Y-foil. Funky? You bet! Ugly, and funky, and still a great ride. Lance and the Posties are rumored to have been on them in the TDF, if the UCI had not banned them from International racing because of no seat post. The Y-foil still one of the best climbers, and scary quick on the downhill... but I digress. The frames are getting very hard to find now. But once again, Ebay to the rescue. They can still be had and are worth every penny if you can put up with the weird looks you get riding one.

OK Ted, I've got 5 lbs on you...but you've got more than 10+ years on me! So I lose!!
Yeah, Colnago, Ciocc, Pinarello, Masi... Funny, the dough I just dropped on the Ric 4001 would be about half of a Campy Record equiped C-40 bicycle! Funny what we spend our money on huh? Then you go out and crash it goin' for a corner, racing for a $50 prime, and a ten dollar medal! Nuts!!
The only thing I race now (for laughs) is the Senior Games TT down here FL. I came in 6th this year. The first three guys were riding $5K TT bikes. The guy that took first was on the same Cervalo Tyler Hamilton rode in the Tour de France this year. This guy had a full aero helmet, skin suit, TT booties... All of a sudden I don't feel so bad spending my money on a great Ric bass!

Marty,
I hope I didn,t offend you in the previous post. It was certainly not the intention. Just an expression for a benchmark price for one of these basses. There,s no room here for that negativity, perceived or otherwise, that other forums tolerate and this is the factor that makes this place the best.
All that matters in life is that your happy, and I know at present you are! Finding something you really want and being able to realize that is a great thing. Life is too short to live with regret.
Congratulations on a gorgeous bass. I have LL1586 and I,m just an hours drive north from you. Not many of us Ric guys in this area, so if you ever want to get together and compare sometime let me know...
