rickenbacker pickup designs...
who were the people responsible for designing, testing and building the many different '60's/'70's toasters and higain pickups we know today ??? all one dude ??? many many dudes and dudesses ???
Re: rickenbacker pickup designs...
I reckon it all starts with Beauchamp. (Pronounced BEEK-um, IIRC)
Re: rickenbacker pickup designs...
Mr. Beauchamp, Mr. FC Hall, Mr. JH, and whoever else was employed at the time.
This is a good place to say this again: I wish RIC would develop a "Toasterbucker." It doesn't have to have precisely the jangle of a toaster, but the need for humbuckers on stage with bad house wiring, neon beer signs, dimmers, etc., is great.

Ok, off topic but feel the need to mention this:jdogric12 wrote:I reckon it all starts with Beauchamp. (Pronounced BEEK-um, IIRC)
Just passing comment here on the pronunciation of Beauchamp. The correct one is BEECHAM

...or, Beach-um. Just think, if his name was spelled Beauchbaum, it could have been pronounced Beach Bum!ByrdBro wrote:Ok, off topic but feel the need to mention this:jdogric12 wrote:I reckon it all starts with Beauchamp. (Pronounced BEEK-um, IIRC)

It's a french name, isn't it ?jdogric12 wrote:I reckon it all starts with Beauchamp. (Pronounced BEEK-um, IIRC)
It's quite hard to tell how it's pronouced in french because it uses sounds that don't exist in english.
You can try "Boshemp" without pronouncing the "m" and the "p" at the end.
I'm afraid it's not very clear.
Re: rickenbacker pickup designs...
Us Americanos love screwing up the correct pronouniation of non-American names/words.
Example - Dubois, many Americans pronounce it Due-Boys!
IIRC, The French pronounciation of Beachamp would be Bo-shomp with the P being very softly spoken but still there, like how I always hear how Marcel Duchamp is pronounced. Actually, I think some folks pronounce his name Dada!

I think I understand. Your explanation jives very closely with how I've heard this name pronounced out loud.David Watts wrote:It's a french name, isn't it ?

Some of the older Celtic names can be very tricky too but once I figure out how to say one I find it even more beautiful. As with all languages.

In the Rickenbacker book by Richard. R. Smith he states "...George Beauchamp (pronounced Beechum)...". This is in the introduction on page VII. Although you can't believe everthing in print, I would hope he had done his homework on this.

Maybe Bo-shaun whitout the finish on the n? Not that it is clearer...

George himself used and his living relatives still use the Americanized "Bee-chum" although we all understand the French pronunciation is quite different. Not much different than Adolph and his widely varying last name . . . but everyone gets to choose how to pronounce your own last name.
Anyone as old as I am and growing up in the greater Los Angeles area wouldn't think twice about this as the radio and TV airwaves were full of ads for Dr. Beauchamp ("Dr. Beechum") the "credit dentist".
You'd think we were discussing the last name Dalziel!

Actually i didn't want to bashing the american pronunciation of a french name.
My remark was just for fun.
Us Froggies don't have either the reputation to be good in foreign languages.
But who's this Dee -El ? Is he the man with a name you can't pronounce without the help from Wiki ?

I once took a Gaelic language workshop at an Irish music camp. Whoever first transliterated Gaelic sounds with the Roman alphabet must have been hitting the uisge beatha really hard.
Re: rickenbacker pickup designs...
For some reason all of this trying to figure out how to pronounce names reminds me of this:

I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...
