Us Americanos love screwing up the correct pronouniation of non-American names/words.

Example - Dubois, many Americans pronounce it Due-Boys!

IIRC, The French pronounciation of Beachamp would be Bo-shomp with the P being very softly spoken but still there, like how I always hear how Marcel Duchamp is pronounced. Actually, I think some folks pronounce his name Dada!

In the Rickenbacker book by Richard. R. Smith he states "...George Beauchamp (pronounced Beechum)...". This is in the introduction on page VII. Although you can't believe everthing in print, I would hope he had done his homework on this.

George himself used and his living relatives still use the Americanized "Bee-chum" although we all understand the French pronunciation is quite different. Not much different than Adolph and his widely varying last name . . . but everyone gets to choose how to pronounce your own last name.

Anyone as old as I am and growing up in the greater Los Angeles area wouldn't think twice about this as the radio and TV airwaves were full of ads for Dr. Beauchamp ("Dr. Beechum") the "credit dentist".

I once took a Gaelic language workshop at an Irish music camp. Whoever first transliterated Gaelic sounds with the Roman alphabet must have been hitting the uisge beatha really hard.

That's how I felt when I first read the Mabinogion, to be honest. When I got to the Irish and Scottish myths it was even worse.
