Rub the rusted area with a piece of aluminium foil and a bit of water. The rusted spots should disapear. Or at least be less visible.

...you may also check with the German new distributor: http://www.musik-meyer.de/musik_meyer_kontakt.0.html. However usually they are very strict and only supply to some GC. Another option would be to ask whether there is some kind forumite, that could buy it in the US and ship it over to you.

Will solder new leads to it soon, I think the wooly wire is the ground and the grey tiny wire coming from the centre is the hot wire?

Happy the pickup made its way from Australia to your place safely.

The grey lead should be connected with the shield (woolly wire) on the ground tab and the black lead is the hot signal. I would suspect at one point is was wired with a reverse polarity.

This pickup was on my 68 4001 that was heavily modified by the previous owners. But it is not the original initially on this bass. This pickup looks like it is a "transition" pickup with a pre-74 bobbin and button type poles instead of the slotted poles usually associated with this type of bobbin. It was sprayed black at some point but I can't say when...

Happy to see it used instead of being forgotten in the bottom of the spare part box.

P.S. I'm pretty sure that bridge high-gain pickup is from "some time" in 1973. (honestly!)

But later in 1973, correct? Mine from May 73 has the slotted poles.
