Rub the rusted area with a piece of aluminium foil and a bit of water. The rusted spots should disapear. Or at least be less visible.

If the Colonel's anti-rust suggestion doesn't give the improvements you're hoping for and you decide to buy a new one, Rosetti will supply one for £43 (around €51): http://www.rosetti.co.uk/Product/Ricken ... urround-Ch

...you may also check with the German new distributor: http://www.musik-meyer.de/musik_meyer_kontakt.0.html. However usually they are very strict and only supply to some GC. Another option would be to ask whether there is some kind forumite, that could buy it in the US and ship it over to you.
Re: 4001 1974 restoration
Could manage to buy one here on the forum!! Happy me

Yeah, that's what the forum (friends are) is for!
Re: 4001 1974 restoration
Wow! Making progress now!
Received the neckpickup from Sergio, he really did a good job. Looks fantastic, can't wait to rock this new PU!

Thanks Sergio!
I have got a new pickup surround with fitting screws too, this one is looking great!

Re-assembled the bridge too!

Piece of delrin, I will make a new nut because 4001 string spacing differ from 4003 spacing..

Re: 4001 1974 restoration
And now I want to thank Colonel Sanders. He really boosted my project by just sending me a original 4001 bridge pickup, just for nothing. Don't know how to describe how happy I am with this pickup. THANKS!!!!

Will solder new leads to it soon, I think the wooly wire is the ground and the grey tiny wire coming from the centre is the hot wire?

Thanks Jeff!!

Re: 4001 1974 restoration
Happy the pickup made its way from Australia to your place safely.
The grey lead should be connected with the shield (woolly wire) on the ground tab and the black lead is the hot signal. I would suspect at one point is was wired with a reverse polarity.
This pickup was on my 68 4001 that was heavily modified by the previous owners. But it is not the original initially on this bass. This pickup looks like it is a "transition" pickup with a pre-74 bobbin and button type poles instead of the slotted poles usually associated with this type of bobbin. It was sprayed black at some point but I can't say when...
Happy to see it used instead of being forgotten in the bottom of the spare part box.
Your project is advancing very well!

At your service, Bram! All the best!
Re: 4001 1974 restoration
P.S. I'm pretty sure that bridge high-gain pickup is from "some time" in 1973.
(honestly!)
Re: 4001 1974 restoration
But later in 1973, correct? Mine from May 73 has the slotted poles.
