Re: Toasters: vintage vs re-issue?
I've heard a recent (c. 2007) Toaster compared with what was purported to be a '68 example, with the '68 weighing in with just a little higher resistance on the coil, and they sounded practically identical to my ears. So you may be able to get away with a recent Toaster and not miss anything.

Ash,
Did you have to do ANY routing to accommodate the Horsie???
I ask 'cause I have an old lap steel that I want to put the Horsie into my '91 V63. The original Horsie pick-up looks much bigger than the re-issue currently in the V63.

There are both 1 1/2" and 1 1/4" horseshoes, can you post a photo of what you have?

Jeff,
I would love to, but don't have a camera at the moment. I will try to take some measurements though.
Will post afterward.

Re: Toasters: vintage vs re-issue?
Greg, just measure the width of the shoes. You need 1 1/4 inch shoes. Some earlier laps had 1 1/2" shoes. You can use that bigger width, Mark did on his skeleton Rick, but you'd need to rout the recess wider.

No, no routing was required but my new horsie measures 1¼" - same size as the re-issue one that I removed.

Re: Toasters: vintage vs re-issue?
Jeff, John and Ashgray......
I WILL need to do some routing if I want to add the magnetized Horsehoe. I can tell just by looking that it is wider than the re-issue pick-up.
I have been going back and forth on whether or not to go through with such a project. Considering what I paid---a Lefty 4001V63 isn't easy to find---I know I'll never get back the purchase price. I didn't buy it as an investment anyway......
So I probably WILL do it when I have the dough.
