75 White 4001.

Post by 1965candyapplered »

Hello Forum Members.

I just picked up a '75 White 4001. A friend of mine set it up for me as best he can (or how he likes it).
I'm a Fender guy for last 25 years but a project I am in now requires a Rick sound (all the recordings were done with a 73 Ric) & I am quite liking it to be honest.
My bass has a bow in the neck (raises up again towards the heel / neck join) Gets a bit buzzy if you play A & E string from 12th fret up. I've also noticed that they have strung the A,D & G strings by passing them under the bridge at the back instead of through the provided bridge holes. I assume they did this to sharpen the angle on the string at the saddles. Is this a normal practice? Should I send the bass to a luthier that knows Rics for a proper overhaul. Also the tuners have non original (flat head) screws & washers instead of the Philips type. Can the correct type be sourced?
I'm new to Ricks. Loved playing with a Fuzz pedal strumming chords up the neck ala Dinosaur Jnr. :)

without seeing it...??? but it sounds a bit messed up. You might try here on the forum -

Joey has some setup videos... if you don't feel up to it then I'd find someone who knows Ric's and have them do a good setup. Of course there could be other issues here but I'd try a good neck flat setup first.

Good luck!

Where are you located? I would have someone who knows Rickenbackers look at it.
Watch those teeth, Marlin. I'm not sure we've properly sedated the beast . . .

I agree, and think that Joey's set-up tips for RIC basses are a necessity for RIC owners.

Also, remember that setups -- especially for bass guitars -- are very subjective; what buzzes for you might not buzz at all for someone else, as there's a lot riding on the player's technique. I don't attack the strings very heavily and use my fingers, but someone who uses a pick and attacks the strings with more force would find my bass (with a relatively flat neck and low action) noisy and perhaps unplayable. Also, some fret buzz is to be expected on many bass guitars, and shouldn't really be an issue if that buzz doesn't come through the amp and eat-up your tones.

Some pictures of the issues would be useful for advising you.
