John, the pole pieces on the [vintage] 60's pickup had the shorter poles the longer ones are the re-issue.you can very carefully cut the slugs with a dremel ,ask Jeff or Ted how to do this.It may or may not change the sound,Ive heard of peaple doing this.

Even though it would be a shame to not have a "fully" restored 4005 IMHO it would be an interesting experiment to try those DarkStar pups from Fred at http://www.basspickup.com. Just throwing it out there as a possibility...

I don't have DarkStars yet in my 74 M-85 II but it would be nifty to do it...been chewing on it.

My '67 4005WB has short poles on the neck pickup and long poles on the bridge pickup. You shouldn't have to take the pickups off to see them, just look between the pickups and the body.

Humbuckers might be an interesting idea. Try the neck pickups from a Gibson EB-3 or '70s Telecaster Bass! Ha ha ha!

Kenny's restoration turned out nice, but I would have definitely kept a big pickup in the middle position on this bass. No, it's not "stock", but the 4005 in general would really benefit from having a pickup in or close to the sweet spot.

Might be original and just an early attempt by Ric at chambering to lighten the weight of the bass.

Here is a pic of what the bracing looks like under the top, so you know what you are dealing with and what should be repaired/replaced.

I would think a good luthier could probably glue patches into the bracing and put in maple patches in the top, if you wanted to get away the cheapest route.
