Strap-Locks for a Ricky?

Post by slave »

Hi All,

I own a Rick 4003, '82 Azure Blue.
Problem is, the standard strap pins are small and repeatedly slip from my straps (I own several, they all suffer from this).
I've got no confidence in myself not to drop the bass during a show as I like to jump around. I really don't want to drop my Rick, so I've retired my newly acquired Rick from the rotation until I can fix this up. So sad. :(
Please don't tell me to use gaffer tape on my bass.....

So I bought a set of Dunlop Dual Straplocks, just like I've done for every other bass I've ever owned since I converted to straplocks.
Only I have a problem....

As you can see, the diameter of the Dunlop supplied screw is a little thin for the hole in the bass. The Dunlop button won't allow a larger screw.
In the past, I've had two solutions for this.
I've found plugging the hole with matchsticks and glue to work, but is often a temporary measure IME.
In this case, the hole is quite large, I feel matchsticks isn't the right play here.
The other is the old chippy's trick of drilling out the hole a little larger, inserting/gluing in a dowel of an old drumstick (Hickory is hard) spun down on the lathe to the appropriate size to fit under the strap pin so the mod is hidden, and then screwing into that.
But I'd rather do something a little more reversible if possible.

So what do you guys use? Have you ever had this problem?
Is there a Straplock specifically out there that'll screw into the standard size Rick-hole? (yes I realise how that sounds)

Thanks

The strap bolt in your picture is Rickenbacker part number 05901, which is also used for the mute adjustment. You might want to try their part number 05904 - the Schaller straplock compatible strap bolt. Available directly from RIC: http://boutique.rickenbacker.com/BOLT-S ... p_648.html

Both have the same threads, so will screw right in without mod. It is designed for Schaller straplocks, not Dunlop.

Here's a picture installed on my MG 4000:

I had to do the same with my old 4000,after i suffered a mishap that fortunately only left me with a broken guitar cable end. All my newer Ricks already have the straplock buttons installed,so i now regularly use a straplocked strap every time i play.
However,i've also noticed that my body movements force the straplock to work the bolts out of the body.
( )
Whenever i play for any length of time,i have to tighten the bolts by hand. I've actually done the matchstick thing to try to slow that process down, but think the use of the screw pictured above would be a better long term solution.
This is not a problem i've ever experienced with any other brand.....

I have a pair of those Ric straploks that will thread right in. Came off my 4003S I bought last year. PM if interested, I no longer need them.

Just in case anyone else stumbles across this and has a similar problem, I'll leave this here.
I wanted the mod to be completely reversible, so I decided not to go with the Matchsticks or Drumstick idea.

I ended up buying some 3/16 bolts, 25mm in length, with the same thread pattern as the Ric strap-pin screw, ground the head down to fit inside the Dunlop straplock button, opened up the Dunlop button hole to fit the 3/16 thread. Pretty easy stuff.
More info and you can find pictures here;

Cheers for the all the help peeps

Sounds pretty much like what I've done with standard Schaller strap locks to fit 'em to Ricks...
