What should I pay for a late 60's 4001?
I've been in the market for my first Rick bass and have decided a 60's Fireglo with checkerboard binding is what I want. I've got a line on a couple at this time. One is a '68 with a changed horseshoe pup in pretty nice condition. What do you think is a reasonable price for a bass of this vintage?

Here is a picture of one of the 4001's I am looking at. This is the '68 I spoke about earlier. It has an HB serial number. It's suppose to be all original (other than for the horseshoe). Does this pass inspection and is this the preferred "Split tailpiece" I've heard discussed here previously? Your help is truly appreciated as I want to be sure I don't have buyers remorse (because something isn't quite right) on my 1st Rick bass! Thanks

Vintage Guitar 2005 has 68 4001's in excellent all original condition as: low $2500.00 to high 3800.00 w/original case.
That is in really nice shape or appears to be anyway. Is the horseshoe in it a real one from the 60's or a re-issue? I assumed it was a re-issue horseshoe in it. If it's a 60's HS I would be willing to pay more toward the higher end if I had to.

Ron, IMO the guts of the pickup have been replaced, the surround looks as though it is original. The base of the pickup looks to be the black plastic type as found in V63's, whereas the originals had an aluminum base.
The bridge/tailpiece looks fine, the plating looks decent on this one. Since it was a plated alloy(aluminum), the plating on some of these tended to flake off.
All in all, a very nice bass here from what I can see.
