What should I pay for a late 60's 4001?

Post by ratso »

I've been in the market for my first Rick bass and have decided a 60's Fireglo with checkerboard binding is what I want. I've got a line on a couple at this time. One is a '68 with a changed horseshoe pup in pretty nice condition. What do you think is a reasonable price for a bass of this vintage?

I sold my '68 4001 for $6500 ... somebody made me an offer I couldn't refuse ... I think it was worth less than that ...

the 70's ric basses are better players for the most part ...

With a changed pickup I wouldn't pay more than $2000-2500 for it.

Can anyone tell me what the 2005 Vintage Guitar price guide or similar publications say? What have other 68's gone for recently?? Thanks to Jeff and Bob for your responses. All other forum member's opinions appreciated.

Here is a picture of one of the 4001's I am looking at. This is the '68 I spoke about earlier. It has an HB serial number. It's suppose to be all original (other than for the horseshoe). Does this pass inspection and is this the preferred "Split tailpiece" I've heard discussed here previously? Your help is truly appreciated as I want to be sure I don't have buyers remorse (because something isn't quite right) on my 1st Rick bass! ThanksImage

mine went to a collector who wanted an all original 60's ric and was willing to pay above the market price ... I agree with Bob between 2 and 3 K wouls be more realistic ...

That looks like a beauty, Ron! 2,500 would be a good deal. It has a horseshoe on it, is it a replacement shoe?

Vintage Guitar 2005 has 68 4001's in excellent all original condition as: low $2500.00 to high 3800.00 w/original case.
That is in really nice shape or appears to be anyway. Is the horseshoe in it a real one from the 60's or a re-issue? I assumed it was a re-issue horseshoe in it. If it's a 60's HS I would be willing to pay more toward the higher end if I had to.

That price is for mapleglos, they don't have Fireglos listed from 66-70 for some reason.

I think the tailpiece is split, it's hard to see. Have you seen this bass in person? The photo looks a little toned down to me, of course I know next to nothing about photography.

I believe it is a reissue pup, but I will find out additional info, in the meantime here is a close up of pickup and tailpiece for your comments.

Ron, IMO the guts of the pickup have been replaced, the surround looks as though it is original. The base of the pickup looks to be the black plastic type as found in V63's, whereas the originals had an aluminum base.

The bridge/tailpiece looks fine, the plating looks decent on this one. Since it was a plated alloy(aluminum), the plating on some of these tended to flake off.

All in all, a very nice bass here from what I can see.
