The black one's really beautiful. Almost makes me reconsider my old decision to never play 5 strings.

My wife has declared her support for the aesthetics. She's into vintage furniture and architecture and thinks the pickup design is very "space age".
If you listen to enough gospel music it's difficult to not get a bad case of GAS for a good B string.clasbas wrote:Almost makes me reconsider my old decision to never play 5 strings.
Re: New basses
Other than the pickups, are the electronics identical to those on a 4003?

Does that mean you got her support to buy one?cassius987 wrote:My wife has declared her support for the aesthetics. She's into vintage furniture and architecture and thinks the pickup design is very "space age".

Did anyone who checked these out at NAMM see if they have lightweight tuners or the normal Schaller tuners? Also, does anyone know if the pickups are RWRP/humbucking?

Same tuners as a 4003. The pickups are single coil.cassius987 wrote:Actually yes! I'm lucky she's such a Ric fan. By the way, the bass player for Mana, the most successful rock band ever in Latin America, played it today. He LOVED it!
Re: New basses
Ben, what bugs have to be ironed out before these go to production?

Re: New basses
The pick guard shape was lasered in house with the new neck pickup in mind, but that was using the pre-2015 double hump geometry for some reason. Don't worry, in production these will have the same non-hump pick guards as the 4 stringers. The nuts for these were also lasered out of black acrylic. They will instead be machined by our supplier like our other ones en masse.
These pickups are 3D printed. Once they are in mass production they will either be machined or cast like our other bobbins.

Here's a little noodling.
I am by no means a fan of 5 string basses. However, this one was very addictive. It was hard putting it down.

Re: New basses
Sounds really terrific. The bridge pickup has a new tonal quality that I enjoy -- hint of Jazz Bass, but not full blown honk. Wish I heard more B string action on the video, though!s4001 wrote:Here's a little noodling.

I'm a big fan of the current "S" aesthetic as opposed to triangles/binding. (But that's how I feel regardless.) The pickups look awesome as is.
I'm talking to my favorite dealer about what the next steps are.
Re: New basses
The bridge pup has a lot of honk and sliding into the notes sounds really snarly.
Re: New basses
I like the new pickups with the dot inlays, a perfect balance. If the neck had the deluxe inlays it would be to much, in my aesthetic mind.
