This is a bit off topic, but a few years ago I acquired an early 4001CS made in 1991 and like many in the early numbers it has yellowed into what looks like a Yellow Cab limited edition. It plays like a dream and I love it, but I'm curious if there is any rubbing or polishing compound that will return it's appearance to the Cream finish we all know and love on

I wouldn't think so. That is the clearcoat turning yellow over time, so you can't change it, other than removing it, which would not be adviseable, IMHO.

Just out of interest, does anyone know if Chris’s bass would have had the cap in it? I probably already 8bow the answer to this question, but I’m getting to that age, sadly.

Everything that I've heard about his RM is yes, the cap was in that bass.

I used the automobile polish that Paul W. recommended on my “white” 74 4000 when I got in the early 2000s.
Unfortunately the brand name isn’t coming to mind ATM. Senior moments are getting more and more bothersome
Does Anybody remember? He recommended this particular brand, but any high quality polish would probably work.
The 4000’s finish was very splotchy, varying degrees of yellowing happening all over. I went over the entire body several times,
and it lightened and evened out the color considerably. Even better, all the splotches disappeared.
