1972 Checker / full width MOP on eBay - $1,999 BIN

Post by ilan »

Just needs correct machine heads and single-layer pickguard. I'd go for it if I hadn't already bought the white 73 this morning.

That is a sweet price, but look at those tuners. The peg holes were drilled to fit those larger replacement tuners.

The only problem with that bass is that the machine head bores had to be widened to "Fender specs" to accommodate those Schaller tuners. I have those same tuners on a 4003 and, like this bass, the bores are HUGE and the truss rod cover had to be carved a bit to fit back in place.

Excellent point Mitch. I have to wonder also what was done to the body when the P-Bass pickups were installed. The mod has since been reversed but how much carving was done to make them fit? Notice how the treble cover was reinstalled? If I had a dime for every time I have seen someone do that...........

I have a 72 FL just like that except it is stock and in better shape. LL, one month later.

Also needs a toaster and who knows if the screw top high gain is still in it.

I should think the original treble p.u. is gone too.
Anyway, grab it, someone. I'll supply the winning bidder with a decent-looking Image replacement pickup set - honest.
A Rickenbacker bass is much like the Jaguar E car - perennially ultra-fashionable.

Sérgio is intimately aquainted with my 72 screw top as a matter of fact.

Replace the tuners with Hipshot 11/16" Ultralites and you are in business as far as the tuners are concerned. I had to do this with my 4005WB.

Those tuners are the exact same ones that were on my '72 JG when I got it. I doweled the holes and redrilled them for grovers before refinishing it... they're nice tuners, I just like the originals best.

Pickguard is aftermarket, 3 or 5 ply, too short on the upper side, and the pickup hole is too squared off. Also notice how they couldn't get that one upper screw hole covered, with missing screw--and there's another 'extraneous' screw hole beneath it. Wonder what else is hiding beneath it?

Lots of original stuff missing. I want one of these, someday, but would like to start with something far more complete.
