Woodstock 40th Anniversary

Post by firstbassman »

In exactly two months.

Hard to believe it’s been that long. My only regrets are that I didn’t take a 35mm camera and that I didn’t try to convince my ride to stay until the end.

A new re-issue of the film is released on DVD (and BluRay). I usually avoid those re-issues like the plague but I think I’m going to get this one.

Forty years ago...sheesh.... you had to remind me, didn't you?  I was on the opposite coast at the time, and it sounded like a lot of fun. I remember going to see the documentary somebody made later on. That was some solace for missing it.

I saw a copy of this at Wal-Mart, wanted to buy it, but figured my Uncle would get me one when I go to Orlando to see him this week.

+1, Jerry!!!! 8) I actually met Michael Shrieve in the Seventies. That was one of the greatest drum solos of all time (or at least on film).

I'm very curious about the unseen footage of CCR, Mountain and others.

FWIW, Michael Shrieve has his own "Amazon Store" on amazon.com. He has performed on about 50 albums. He went way beyond the early Santana days (he was barely 20 at Woodstock) and is still going strong: http://www.amazon.com/Michael-Shrieve/e ... FP0HRCGK19

I just Wiki'd him, then went to his website. A fabulous career, still going strong and doing interesting things. There's a cool pic on his site, he and his first drum set, 16 yrs old at his parents. Three years later he's playing that same set at Woodstock.

The remastered box set is absolutely fantastic! The previously unseen footage has been well restored (and there's a good amount of it), and the 5.1 surround sound on everything is awesome. They really did a great job with this box set, and it's worth every penny.

BTW, Sony Legacy is issuing (at the end of this month) albums by five of the Woodstock performers that were originally released in 1969. These are limited and numbered deluxe two CD editions, with the second disc being their entire Woodstock set!!! The titles are:

Jefferson Airplane Volunteers
Janis Joplin I Got Den Ol' Kosmic Blues Again Mama
Santana Santana
Sly And The Family Stone Stand!
Johnny Winter Johnny Winter

http://www.amazon.com/Jefferson-Airplan ... l_1#disc_1
http://www.amazon.com/Janis-Joplin-Wood ... 623&sr=1-5
http://www.amazon.com/Santana-Woodstock ... 623&sr=1-4
http://www.amazon.com/Sly-Family-Stone- ... 23&sr=1-11
http://www.amazon.com/Johnny-Winter-Woo ... 623&sr=1-9

Of greatest interest here (to me) is the Johnny Winter set, as there has previously been only one Johnny Winter Woodstock song issued - Mean Town Blues. And that has been edited.

Rhino is also releasing a six disc box set on Woodstock, containing a mix of already released and even more unreleased Woodstock tracks. This is due out August 15th. Keep your eyes open for that.
Ka is a wheel.
