360.12/c63 thinner tops & x bracing ?

Post by Ric_MEL »

Do the 360.12/c63's have the thinner tops and X Bracing.. like the pre 1973's Rics ?

I just discovered they have the 7.25" < or there abouts > fretboard radius.. and a .0047 cap between treble pickup and volume.. so there really are some differences in this beautiful guitar.. thinner tops and x bracing would be the frosting on the top !

All this is speculative of course.. as I've never touched one.. but since I don't have one.. I read about 'em ! :D

X-bracing, yeah. Not sure about the top, I think it's normal thickness.

Yes to X-bracing. No to thinner top. My c63's top seems to be the same thickness as my '02 360/12. The c63 also has a 3K ohm (or so) toaster pickup in the neck position. It's an amazing guitar.

Hi, Simon!

My question is, how does that neck pickup sound different from the one on your 2002 360/12? (Do you have a 7.4K toaster in that one, or is my memory failing?) After reading your threads describing your new C63, I've concluded that a Fireglo C63 is the only way for me to go. Chris Clayton at POTR hasn't had one in ages. Can anyone direct me to someone else who might have a new one in stock?

Hi Robert!

I had a 7.4K toaster in my '02 360/12 but I swapped it out for a 12K to give me a wider tonal palette between it and my c63. The 3K or 5K [I haven't measured it yet] neck toaster in the c63 sounds different from what I recall about the 7.4K toaster. It sounds more 'jazzy'/full/rich sounding and perhaps reflects the acoustics of the guitar more than the 7.4K toaster. Perhaps this is attributed not to its lower impedance but its position just below the 21st fret on the c63. My '02 360/12's neck toaster is below the 24th fret. I've read in several threads that this is a harmonically significant difference. The c63's neck pickup also has very short poles that barely extend below the bottom of the pickup.

I think you will be very happy with c63. It seems to be a hard to find guitar. A quick search of Gbase revealed a few places selling used and new 360/12c63s: http://www.gbase.com/gear/find?gs=y&key ... 60%2f12c63.

Hope that helps, and feel free to ask any more questions.

Simon,

Thanks for the link. Those prices are steeper than I'd thought! Will I be paying in the viscinity of $3000 wherever I buy one? Are the used ones from before 2005 cheaper?

Hi Robert,

I think this is starting to get off topic... but when I was hunting for a c63, $3,000 was the ballpark for used ones. I don't recall the year making a huge difference to the price. There just don't seem to be many c63s floating around... The V64s are less expensive, but they don't have the same features, such as the 7.25 inch neck radius, X-bracing, the pickups, etc. The V64 is a great guitar too but it's not the same as a c63.

All the best,
Simon

I know that the 360/12 Carl Wilson have are supposed to replicate a mid-60's model 360. Does this mean that they also have the 7.25" neck radius?

I believe the Carl Wilson 12 string models had the standard 10" fretboard radius. I think RIC used the same neck as the 360/12V64 model on these.

I've been looking for info on this for a while and hadn't been able to find anything. It's that lack of data that's had me hold off on buying the Carl Wilson model when the opportunity has come my way.

Just to be sure, I compared my 360/12CW to my 360/12C63 and the CW definitely has a "flatter" fretboard.

They are both great guitars but have some different features.

It turns out that Pick of the Ricks has a new 360/12C63 scheduled to arrive in December. I have my eye on that one. After all, what better Christmas gift than a George Harrison model? 8)

Hmm, I wonder how they know when they're going to get something when even we don't know that.
