Re: Converting 4003 electronics to 4001CS

I don't intend to use the cover of the horseshoe, and I would just use the surround that is already in my 4003. Is the raw pickup the same or similar to a bridge hi gain?

Converting 4003 electronics to 4001CS

I am attempting to get a 4001CS sound out of my 4003. Could this be achieved by replacing the neck pickup with a hot toaster, and the bridge with a horseshoe? Were the horseshoe pickups of the era different than they are today? Would a custom wound (12k) high gain from Custom Amplification match the ...

Re: Post of picture of you PLAYING your ric

I love it! I've been discovering a lot of funk and fusion stuff played on Rics, and its really encouraging. This is the kind of stuff I'm interested in, but I used to be afraid that Rics weren't really made for that. Boy was I wrong!

Top notch bass playing.

Jeffrey,
Good to know there's another Ric user here in Columbus. Let me know if you are playing around town, I'll come check it out!

Re: Stanley Clarke and a 4001 (RTF)

Wow, that was excellent. I absolutely love RTF. I think Stanley is now my favorite bassist. I've been playing jazz fusion on my 4003 for a while now, and I thought I was weird for doing it. Now here's a master in fusion playing a classic Ric! Doesn't get any better than this.

Any idea what amps he ...

Re: Post of picture of you PLAYING your ric

Here's a picture from our gig at the Columbus Gallery Hop. It was Christmas themed, very festive, and extremely cold. My fingers were too frozen to play half of our songs, so I either used my thumb like a pick (as seen in the photo!), or I just played solely with my left hand. Overall, it was fun ...

Removing Electronics for shielding

I recently attempted to shield my 4003 with copper tape, but I only made the noise worse. When I tried to remove the electronics, I couldn't desolder the wires (I think my iron may not be powerful enough). I would like to try it again, this time removing the electronics and testing the resistance at ...

Re: Best bang for the buck?

I use a Yorkville XM200T combo amp. It's a 200 watt amp with 2x10" speakers. The tone is excellent, and very powerful. You can also get the 115 extension cab, and it makes it sound very round and present. The whole rig will run you about $900.

Power amp choices for bass

What are some things to look for in a good power amp for bass? It seems like the lighter digital ones wouldn't handle the low frequencies as well as ones with massive transformers. Is this true? What brands are good for bass applications? I hear a lot of good things about QSC and Stewart. Stewart ...

So what is the best way for shielding (if there is one) or reducing noise in general? I have a noise gate, but it's one that activates when I'm not playing. When I am playing, I hear the noise. Besides, it takes away from my tone, and I'd prefer to not use it if possible.

Hipshot bridge

What is your take on the hipshot bridge? It seems to offer a little more accessability to adjusting the strings. It may not be stock, but is it more practical?

Any experience with shielding your pickups?

Rickenbackers are probably the noisiest basses made. At least from what I've played. I'm looking into shielding the electronics with copper tape. Does anyone have experience and/or have tips on how to do this and how it worked out?

Just an update on my situation:

I changed my strings to Rotosound Steve Harris strings, which are 110-95-75-50 guage, and I got a 15" extension cab. The strings are super tight in standard tuning, which will take some getting used to, but I've used tight flats before. In CGCF they are perfect. I ...
