Another thought, Scott. If you tried a Laredo and still missed the 4003 tone, you could put in a couple high gains and concentric pots and have a "modern 4003".

I thought of that when I had the CII John.

The only problem is that I would think you would have to "de-button" the high gains due to string clearance problems. Not a big task, but a little out of my field. I also was on the bubble with the toasters,,but in the end, I just surrendered and traded it to Jeff Rath.

I will try a Larado though..

If you get to that point, and want to try high gains, I see two ways. Pull the buttons out and put in hex set screws, or get toaster covers and go with a rod or dowel pin. I could assist.

I've had both toasters and hb's in a Cii and I think the biggest difference(for me) was amp selection. I replaced the toasters with the hb's because they complimented the B string frequencies better. I wasn't satisfied with the hb's when played through an Ampeg or Eden amp. When I got my Markbass amp the hb's became much more detailed and clear, combined with a Sansamp RBI I was finally satisfied with the tone. I think the biggest issue with people going from 4001/3 to 4004 is the perceived "muddiness" or thickness in the bass tone, a bass amp with enhanced clarity will definitely help in this area.

I only have one, a 620 BBR, and these are just a couple of raw snaps taken quickly a few minutes ago straight out of the case. Don't have real posed shots yet Image Hope these do... Image

I've been looking at photos of Hawaii, trying to decide which hotel to stay in and what to do during my vacation there, after SoCal in September. The blueburst reminds me of the glorious beach photos I've been gazing at, as I sit here in the cold, cold darkness of winter Image

Writing from Wisconsin here; define "cold, cold, darkness of winter" as it is in Australia, please. Image

Darren, if you're interested in fine dining and will be in or near Honolulu, drop me a note. I was there last year and can make some nice recommendations.

I was in Melbourne last year too, and we ate very well there as well.

Er, sorry for the thread drift. Eating is one of my other major hobbies.
